"We are doers of the Word of God and are blessed in our deeds. We are happy in those things which we do because we are doers of the Word of God." James 1:22

This is just one of the beautiful flowers in bloom here along the waters.
Today started off quite early with our weekly UMCOR meeting. It's a time when we can all get together and share ideas and keep everyone as up to date as possible with all that is going on. Not an easy job, even meeting once a week!
From there Monty and I headed off to get some shopping done. Today is his birthday and he needed some new work shoes. Not a very exciting present but he needed them. It didn't take long to get that done before we headed to Texas City for a meeting with the Presbyterian Recovery Leaders. They had taken the summer off and are just getting back to camp and getting things restarted. Chester and Pat are from Minnesota and volunteered for a couple of weeks after Katrina. They decided to come here and dedicate 6 months of their lives to running the volunteer camp. Their volunteers will be doing some work with us. In fact, we have our first team in just a week. It was good to meet them both and we look forward to working with them and getting even more work done with even more volunteers. It's all about working together!
From there we headed back to San Leon to check on the progress at Paul and Linda's. Their ceramic tile flooring is completely done and they are started on the kitchen cabinets. What beautiful cabinets they are too! Tomorrow they should have them all installed and Linda will have even more space than she had before the storm! She is so excited I think she might burst before they all get done! She praises Miguel to the hilt and is so thankful for all the work all the folks have put into rebuilding their home!
It was evening before we finally made it back home, just in time for a birthday dinner of Monty's choice, Vietnamese fish soup! I'm telling you -- it's his favorite meal! Homemade with all hand ground spices and all sorts of fish -- just what he wanted. Oh yes -- his "other" birthday "gift" was a flu shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey --- it's what he wanted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "You know you're old when . . .???"
Until next time . . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

These photos show just how close Paul and Linda are getting to having their brand new kitchen and bathroom completely done and ready to use. The tile floors are in and the bath is already grouted and ready for sealer. The kitchen will be the same by the end of the day. You can see by Linda's face that she is more than ready and so excited to see the progress day by day. She's already planning on a huge gumbo feast for all who have been involved! Monty is ready!! :)
We also stopped and checked on Walter. Looks as though his neighbors will indeed have his interior walls ready for our volunteers this weekend. All they need to do is get the supplies and the women will be ready to paint and bring it to life.
Hai is also nearly moved in. She finds herself living in both the FEMA trailer and her house -- just needs to get things moved and some window blinds up and she will be in. She's been a bit busy with getting kids in school and such and with her husband getting ready to be deployed to Afghanistan she has her hands full.
I had the pleasure of attending the weekly staff meeting for "Boat People" this morning. They are preparing cases to bring to the Long Term Recovery for assistance and wanting to make sure they have their paperwork all lined up. It was nice to meet all of them. As I have said many times before -- it takes all of us working together to make this recovery work!
Just a side note to everyone out there --- tomorrow is MONTY'S BIRTHDAY!!! I won't tell his age, especially since he's nearly 11 years younger than me!!!!!
Until then . . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

You most likely have forgotten but one year ago Ike crashed onto the shores of southeast Texas. It came in with winds of a category 2 storm but the surge of water was a category 4. Galveston County will never be the same.
Yes, alot of progress has been made over the past year. The photo shows how we used to work in the homes when we arrived. Thankfully nearly all the homes have been gutted, not all but nearly all. We are in the rebuilding stage with most.
As I think back over the past year alot of thoughts and emotions come into my mind.
I remember when the remains of Ike hit Indiana. We were there still working in the recovery of the June 2008 floods. First Assembly of God had planned their church picnic for that Sunday afternoon. The day started out beautiful, perfect for a picnic. But . . . the weatherman had been warning all of us that Ike had actually restructured himself and was headed our way by about 5pm. And oh how right they were. The picnic started at 3pm with the cookout to begin at 5. It did begin, along with the rain and winds that nearly blew us all from our seats. By 6 we all but gave up and headed home. Power lines were down and clear up north in Indiana we felt the effects of this storm!
By the time Monty and I arrived here in Texas by mid October we realized Indiana was blessed! But . . . this time we knew exactly what needed to be done, how to get it done and how it would look when it was done. God had taught us so many lessons after Katrina and those Indiana floods! Once again He called us to take that knowledge, combine it with more compassion and love and get to work!
One year later we have rebuilt some, blessed homeowners as they moved back "home" and continue working on more. We've seen thousands of volunteers and have them scheduled nearly to Christmas. We've watched God change both their lives and the lives of the homeowners. And He has changed ours . . . even more.
I am still waiting for the day when I physically see His Hands. I see them working through so many others but the day will come!
As you say your prayers this evening please include all those here along the coast who are still rebuilding; physically and emotionally. It will take more time, more money and more volunteers. But most of all it will take prayers!!
To those of you who have donated money, volunteered your own time and have prayed numerous prayers -- we thank you and the homeowners thank you! YOU are God's hands and heart and we are forever grateful!
Until next time . . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

My flight back to Texas went just fine yesterday -- I admit I felt a bit jet lagged and worn out but today was one of those days where God showed me why I came back (other than the fact that Monty and I missed one another so very much)
The day began with the United Way Annual fundraising kickoff campaign combined with the one year anniversary of hurricane Ike (on the 13th) I was asked to be the voice for the homeowners, expressing thanks and the immense blessings the volunteers bring to the homeowners. There were way more people there than I had thought, complete with the Mayor. It was a great time and hopefully everyone has a better understanding of the bond that is built between homeowner and volunteer.
From there it was time to get back into the swing of things and see how our "families" have been doing over the past weeks. WOW -- what amazing changes!
You can see by the above photos that Walter's house has been transformed! The siding is amazing and he now has a set of steps with a landing that will enable him to get upstairs! But the most amazing thing is that the team that did the siding and steps is done -- but we met another team working inside hanging all his sheetrock and has plans for so much more! They were his neighbors! Yes, they stepped in right behind our own volunteers and really started pouring out the blessings! They will finish the sheetrock, we will come in and paint and they will continue with the installation of kitchen cabinets and complete his bathroom! Now THIS is what America should be about -- neighbor helping neighbor -- in the literal sense!
We also checked up on the work being done at Paul and Linda's -- I was double amazed! They have the kitchen completely torn out and walls back up. The handicapped accessible shower is installed and they are now working on the electrical issues they uncovered. The outside siding is up and will only need caulked and painted. What a blessing that is being poured out there!
We also stopped by Hank and Cherie's to see the installation of their carpeting happening. It's beautiful and they are beaming with joy! (And to think that someone had the nerve to tell me their mobile home couldn't be rebuilt)!!!!! Never !!!!! limit God!!!
Our last stop took us to Maria's just in time to see the children getting off the bus. Maria has outdone herself. She taught herself to not only finish sheetrock, she textured all the walls and then primed them! I told her I always knew women were amazing in construction --- she just smiled from ear to ear and continued showing us her work! We will also be painting the inside of their home next weekend with our incoming team of 20 women! Monty is still working on plumbing issues but has the entire plan in his head. That's all I need to know because once it's in his head it will come to pass - and it will be done to perfection!
An amazing day -- a day God showed me that He is at work -- even if we need to take some time to attend to other things He sends our way! I am so thankful that He took me in His arms today and warmed my heart and made me smile!
Until next time . . . be blessed and be a neighbor to someone! Susan and Monty

Storm clouds looming over the coast, and we caught one of the brighest rainbows I think we've ever seen as a result.
Yes, I made it to the airport this evening only to find the flights were all delayed enough that I would have been stranded through the night in Atlanta so now I will be getting up at 3 AM to make the first flight out tomorrow.
My mother reports nothing new with my grandma, still mainly incoherant and gravely ill.
I will just be glad to get there and see her and hopefully offer some much needed support to my mother!
Monty is such an amazing husband as he will be staying here, missing seeing his own family but it's his choice and I love the man so much for putting my family's needs first!
I thank you for all your prayers and ask that they continue. I will do the best I can to keep you up to date.
Meanwhile, the electric company will be coming to Mariano's tomorrow to hook up the power and then . . . here we come getting the final AC and electric issues wrapped up!!!
Hank and Cherie also got more materials this morning so they can keep working.
Art is nearing the end of his hospital stay and is doing great.
All our homeowners are doing well and are very supportive of us at times like this. I think it's a family thing and we are blessed with amazing "extended" family here -- and all over the States.
Until next time. . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

Our RV camp manger snapped this photo this evening . . . home sweet home!
Tonight I write this with quite a heavy heart; one filled with mixed emotions.
My Mother called me today to tell me my 96 year old Grandmother is failing fast. It seems her congestive heart failure is worsening along with a few other things. She is incoherant most of the time and has pretty much stopped eating.
I would love it if everyone out there would join us in praying for her. We pray God will fill her with peace -- His perfect peace -- as she "transitions" from here to heaven.
I am doing what I can to get home (at Monty's insistance) so also pray for both of us as we will be apart -- something we neither one are too fond of!
And -- I have another prayer request. One of my dear friends here, Erin, has a little 4 year old son who was diagnosed with a "virus" over a week ago and is not doing well. He (and the family) would surely be blessed by your powerful prayers.
Until next time . . . I love you Grandma 2!!!! Susan and Monty

Some of my folks were "only going to be here Monday" and here we are Thursday and guess what -- they are still here!! More and more new faces along with the one who are now family are what it takes to accomplish all that is being done this week. We are so thankful to the 2 churches who combined their efforts and are making such a difference in so many places!
I heard a rumor today that maybe they will be scheduling to come once a month?? Wouldn't that we awesome!
Monty and his team have all the cabinets installed, counter tops on, sink mounted and are wrapping up the laminate flooring. Like worker ants, all over the place doing all sorts of things. Our electrician buddy, Glen, even got in on it today. He came to finish up some electrical issues, he said, but I think he came for the fellowship!
My team has nearly all the caulking done -- I have a caulking wizard in this group and she is amazing! They are touching up all the trim paint, painting new doors, installing the front door (what a bear of a job that is), working outside with trim . . . the list goes on and on.
A surprise came to Hank and Cherie today also! Thanks to the Today Show and all the donations that came with it! I needed a washer and dryer for them and when Erin heard about it she was happy to give them one that came with the show. When I pulled up at Hank and Cherie's and we opened the box we were all shocked -- a top of the line set that is beautiful! They were thrilled and we were all almost in tears as we looked at all the settings! Thanks Erin and the Today Show! You are making miracles happen!
Until next time . . . be blessed and share the blessing! Susan and Monty

Seeing this on the back of one of the "1,000 Boots" team brought a flood of memories and thoughts.
One of the top questions I have been asked is "how did you know this is what God called you to do?"
Answer -- I knew all my life! As a child growing up, entering high school and thinking of the ever present question "what are you going to do when you graduate?" I knew! Somehow, someway -- I was going to help others. The only organization I knew of then was the Peace Corps. I sent for the information packet, read every word and thought about joining up. But, this was more than a few decades ago and that wasn't something a girl did just out of high school. (Times were different then)
Time kept moving, life happend but that "feeling" deep inside was always there.
Each time my church would talk of an upcoming mission trip (which was always overseas) my heart ached to go, to be a part, to help with whatever. And each time it wasn't the "right" time.
When "911" happened, as Monty called me at work to tell me the second plane had hit -- all I wanted to do was "go there." Again it wasn't possible so I sat literally glued to the TV. My heart physically hurt.
Then came hurricane Katrina -- and my heart hurt beyond description --no words can describe it. I can't explain it -- but I HAD to go this time - no matter what!
The rest is history -- we are still "out there" after over 4 years and plan on being out here as long as God needs us.
As for the shirt photo -- a long time ago I ran an employment agency. One of our best employees had a trouble staying out of jail. One day as I was on the phone listening to him beg me to bail him out of jail (and telling him I couldn't as he needed to learn lessons from his choices) my boss came to me and said, "Susan, don't you know you can't change the world?"
That statement went through me like a knife -- clear to my soul!
All of us feel as though we can't "change the world" - it's too large a task -- impossible!
Re-read the phrase on the shirt -- YES we can -- we can BE the change -- ONE person (or family) at a time!
I thank God for His faithfulness, for keeping His promise and for this calling!
Go out and BE the change -- for just ONE!!!! You WILL change the world -- and yourself in the process!
Until next time . . . be blessed by being the change! Susan and Monty

"Batteries included" and we are back up and running.
As you can see, Hai's house is turning blue -- literally! The dark blue "trim" is actually the tape to tape off the white metal trim. It's beautiful and she is very happy with the color.
The other photo -- click on it to enlarge it -- and look VERY closely! I guess that's what you might call a Texas size oar??!! It's a trackhoe on a barge -- using the front scoop to pull itself along -- a quite a pace too! We couldn't believe what we were seeing! Necessity is the mother of invention -- and that's quite an invention!
This afternoon we also were thrilled to see Mercy getting siding on her house. The next step will be fixing her bathtub and a few touches inside. She's waited a long time and her time has finally come!
This morning I was able to take my financial request to the weekly meeting -- the reconnect fee for Mariano's electric. The board agreed to the request and we will be able to get it paid! Praise the Lord! Maria was so excited when I told her! This means we will be able to get the final touches done to the electric and air conditioning. Blessings to that board who understood the situation!
Most of our afternoon was spent organizing tools. It's not possible to get it done with teams coming in and out back to back so today was the perfect time to get things back in order in preparation for incoming teams. When I say "perfect" it (of course) doesn't take into account the temps! There should be a new name for "dripping" tshirts!
This evening I talked with Cherie and she and Hank are ever closer. They continue working on their home all on their own, Hank is working in both the laundry and bathroom and the same time. She will be putting together a list of the last of the materials they need so we can provide them and they can continue getting things done. What an amazing couple they are and we are so pleased to call them family!
I also talked with our always loved team from Iowa today. They are scheduled to return in October and are thrilled to be coming back. I know they will also be thrilled to see the progress on Terri's house as they were the first team to do any work there! They won't believe it when they see it! They are also part of our extended family and we hope they ALL come back this time!
We have our tools loaded and Monty and I both plan on doing some "hands on" work tomorrow in Mariano's house. We both love doing so but never have the opportunity. We have set aside tomorrow and pray it will come to pass. Join us in that prayer! :)
Until next time . . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

Today was the day they had been waiting for, the day they had been asking about for over a week -- "when can we start painting?" I had promised today -- and even though we could only get to one room - that one room transformed and we all had a blast!
Maria had the color she wanted for one wall - and it will need atleast one more coat if not two more. It is beautiful and looks amazing with the other walls, the color of vanilla ice cream. Yami learned what "cut in" was and she did fantastic. They all had a hand in it, either with a roller or brush -- but little Maria's time was limited to a few seconds as she took the new color directly to the trim -- the one place we asked her NOT to paint! That's what we get with a 4 year old!
Little Mariano helped Monty and Glen with the electric -- he fit perfectly underneath the house pulling wire. He was thrilled that he was an important part of helping -- and what little boy doesn't love crawling around in dirt!
All in all we had a great day. There wasn't a dry stitch on any of us, sweat ran from our faces, our shirts were soaked and yet we laughed and laughed as the language switched back and forth from Spanish to English and back to Spanish -- all trying to understand each other. The words didn't matter, it was heart felt fun and I know God had no trouble understanding any of it!
It's Mondays like this that are the perfect description of "relationships" and what God had in mind for all of us.
Not to mention Maria posing for all of us in her "Princess" gown!!! Priceless!
Until next time . . . be blessed. Susan and Monty

These past couple of days have been whirlwinds! Yesterday we said goodbye to our Colorado team as they took Hank, Cherie and Blake for a day at the waterpark. It was a day to keep them from working, to keep them from even thinking about working. A day to play, a day to laugh and a day to deepen relationships and say goodbye at the same time.
Cherie called me today to say how awesome the day was. It worked! They didn't even think about working, rebuilding or the hurricane. Thanks team -- thanks for going the extra mile - for everything you all did in a few short days! God WILL return the blessings and we hope you return to work with us again.
This evening we bid farewell to our North Carolina team. We missed doing so with Jim as he headed home a bit early. Jim -- we thank you for everything but most of all for touching the heart of a small 4 year old little girl!
This team worked up to the last minute and what they accomplished over this past week is phenominal. The house is completely sided and trimmed and caulked and is ready for primer and paint. The inside walls are all sheetrocked and also ready for priming and painting. The newest bedroom is framed, insulated, a new window added and sheetrocked. The kitchen sink is in and ready to go, the bath vanity and toilet are also in and ready for use. Al, our AC guy returned today and will be there again tomorrow and most likely be all done. We still have a few electrical things going on and hopefully will have the service reconnected next week and all systems will be "go" from there.
Maria was up and out very early this morning cleaning up the yard, back and front. This afternoon all the children were brought a special surprise by the team -- brand new backpacks filled with school supplies! It was amazing to watch the smiles come over their faces as they saw their backpack, in their favorite color - and then to see all the goodies inside. Little Maria spent the rest of the afternoon blowing bubbles (an added gift in the bags).
We were blessed to join the team for a homecooked dinner this evening and Wayne shared a devotion with all of us -- the heart of God! This team touched the heart of Maria and her children and in that - touched the heart of God and put a smile on His face. That I know for sure! We are so thankful and are so sad to see yet more new family members leave us!
Monty and I would also like to express our deepest thanks to all of you who have commented on this blog, commented on NBC Brian Williams' blog, emailed, called and texted your supportive words and immense amounts of love! You have ALL touched our hearts and we don't have enough appropriate words to say thank you! We are humbled by your love and support and will repeat what we have said before -- it may have been our faces out there but . . . YOU are the forces behind us and without YOU there would be no "us".
We love you, we thank you and we are honored to serve on your behalf!
Until next time . . . be blessed. We sure are! Susan and Monty
