Yea!!!!!!

Another angel has come forth and today I was able to order and pay for the flooring for all of Michael's new home!!!!!!

Once again God provides just what we need just when we need it. Never too early and never too late, always right on time!

It was fun getting it ordered as the men at the contractors counter know me quite well by now and enjoy hearing what we are doing. The man who takes care of me actually remembered when Michael was in his motorcycle accident all those years ago. I didn't even give his name, Jerry just remembered and was amazed as I told him how this all came about and how it's going. You could see the light in his eyes and the fire in his heart as he thought about regular people just coming together with hands and feet to help and donated funds!

Many times I have said this and I will continue to do so . . . we all need to remember that we might be the only Jesus some people ever get to see . . . so . . .

Many heartfelt thanks to the two latest angels who have stepped up and stepped out and provided more than just funds for flooring --- they have provided hope and life and love!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Today is Valentine's Day -- and this is what I woke up to this morning!!!!!!

God blessed me with a husband who understands that command from Jesus!

I see miracles every day thanks to Monty!

Happy Birthday Michael

It was (and still is) bitter cold out today and the snow was just enough to blanket the ground (and make our steps very slick) but we headed off to Michael's to do some thorough cleaning.

My first stop was the usual, Lowes. I got the vinyl for the bathrooms floors, the adhesive to make sure it sticks down well and the underlayment to make certain it has a really smooth surface. Rob was not sure if he would make it today or not since he is helping his daughter with her science project but whenever he gets there he has materials and can be ready to work.

Keith was busy finishing up the paint. He is excellent at the cut in work and as you can see, working around the ceiling trim isn't easy. Yes, in a perfect world all the trim would wait until all the painting is done but . . .

This was the first time Keith's younger son, Joey, came to help. His older brother, Jonathan, has been quite a few times but today he was working on a Habitat for Humanity project and Joey decided to come. Here he is doing what most kids wouldn't have a clue how to do --- clean the shower! He's even smiling (I asked him to do so) and I think he was actually having a good time! He got them spotless and cleaning up after construction can be a tough job!

When he finished with the showers he moved on to cleaning the ceiling fans and lights! What a great kid!

John started out by trying to help me stop the leaking in my front fuel tank. Since the fuel pump went out and the tank was full when it did, the fuel has been slowing leaking down the side of the truck. John was able to siphon a small amount but we found out there's a security screen inside that keeps people from siphoning the fuel! So . . . he was able to get enough out that I don't think it will leak now!

Next John moved on to taking out trash and also helping clean the showers.

Between all of us we got it pretty well cleaned up and managed to stay warm in the process.

Michael was not feeling well at all --- a really nasty cold that he's been battling all week -- and to top it all off ---- I didn't even know that TODAY IS HIS BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So . . . HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL!!!!! Sorry you feel so yucky! May our Almighty Healer have you up and well quickly!!!!

Ta - Da

There she is! All repaired and actually in better condition than before the tornado struck! Perfection in every area.

The weather today was a tough one! The snow was blowing and the temperatures were really cold. To top it off, when I arrived the men were waiting on help as they had locked the keys in their truck and one of them had their coat inside the truck! And they were laughing hysterically! He also had so many cuts on his hands -- but the cold helped that -- he said he couldn't feel them! What servant hearts!

Putting their heads together working out those special cuts . . . notice the ones who don't even have gloves on!

This is the damage upstairs! When the roof was torn off and the chimney damaged the water came inside. This is where the chimney meet the ceiling in the upstairs bedroom. Mark has been working on it and atleast in this picture all the yucky stuff has been removed and even before noon today he had it looking amazing! He came back -- after working a full day at his job -- and continued working on these areas. He will be back in the morning and probably will be able to prime it and paint it and have it also look better than it did before!

Billy lends a hand in putting on the trim around the ceiling in the dining room. He had saved - and marked each piece as he took it down before we started! We did have to replace a couple of pieces but were able to match the stain and once again - beautiful!

This is the whole crew! Pastor Randy is on the far left and Billy is on the far right! The smiles say it all!
It's been amazing to work with these men this week and I look forward to offering them another project and watching them change the lives of other homeowners --- and their own!

Tomorrow I head to Michael's where we will be doing a thorough cleaning in the trailer in preparation for installation of the flooring. I will stop at Lowes first to pick up the vinyl for both bathrooms and we are still standing on God's promise of provision for the rest of the flooring. We will be ready when God sends it!

Irony --- at its finest!

They continued moving upward all day today! Most of their focus was on the soffits and facia areas. This is where their perfectionism really counts!

It takes total concentration when you are working this high off the ground --- and right in the place where the electrical lines come into the house!

He is busy focusing on making jut the right cut on his soffit material.

Scripture tells us that where two or three are gathered together God is right there in the midst of them. Amen and amen!

Putting the peak on the facia and making it match perfectly! If he gets his nose any closer to the house he'll have it resting on the power lines!

Meanwhile Mark works on the dining room ceiling. He's sanding and sanding to get that perfectly smooth surface and will be priming before the evening is over. He also has some major work to do upstairs around the area where the chimney goes through the house. The chimney was severely damaged and has been completely rebuilt but the damage inside is extensive. Mark will be working on that tonight and by Saturday no one will ever know there was any damage anywhere. Mark has already worked a full time job today but he's still there, lending his expertise and bringing a smile to Billy's face.

Billy told me today that he's really going to miss these guys and will be lonely once again when they leave! They will be back again tomorrow to finish up and I know Pastor Randy plans to make sure Billy isn't nearly as lonely as he used to be.

And at the end of the afternoon Billy helped me load more than a rick of his seasoned firewood to take to Michael's this Saturday! He wanted to be able to give back to someone else in some way and this is a good one! Blessed to be a blessing!!!!!

Now for the irony --- I'm still amazed!

We have noticed that a few of our neighbors have been having new roofs put on over the past months. We just chalked it up to the age of the homes (ours is approaching 20 years old) but still wondered. So this morning Monty headed out to ask the roofers about it. Before I know it the owner of the roofing company and Monty are back here and up on our roof.

The surprise? Our roof has quite a bit of damage from the same tornadoes that damaged Billy and Don! Not only our roof --- but our siding is damaged and broken in areas that are above our heads and thus we haven't noticed! I was shocked! And after seeing for myself I was doublely shocked! Seems nearly everyone here has damage and I shouldn't be surprised because we live less that a quarter mile from where the tornadoes touched down! So . . . a call to our insurance to file the claim has me waiting on a phone call from their adjuster who I will turn over to the roofer and . . . looks like we will be getting a new roof of our own!

I had to laugh! Here we are working on others homes and hadn't even thought to check our own! It just shows Gods provision and reaffirms His promise that He will take care of us when we take care of others!

Colder and climbing

My first picture as I arrived at Billy's this morning. The laughter and smiles told me they didn't mind the cloudy skies and colder temperatures. They were here to get the job done and getting it done they were.

With each strip of siding they are climbing higher and higher and having to extend the ladders taller and taller.

As you can see by this picture -- the garage is basement level so reaching above the garage makes the heights a bit higher. By the time he gets to the top of the second level he will actually be at the height of a third floor structure. Obviously he has no fear of heights!!

Their attention to detail and perfectionism is amazing -- and much appreciated. One thing we always stress to volunteers is that we are building homes for Jesus and thus we don't take the shortcuts. Our goal is to do it the right way, not the quick way. These men already have that ingrained in them and you can tell it by their work!

Each piece is placed with care and precision as they climb higher and higher and closer to the top. They they will move on the to the facia and soffit repairs.

A good overview of the entire project and how they are insulating with new insulation as they move up with the siding. What a difference this will make, especially since this side of the house faces west.

The dining room ceiling looks fantastic! The battle of using 12' sheets of sheetrock was well worth it. The 4 pieces were a perfect fit and the only cutting required was the corner over the stairway! The first coat of mud is on and after a bit of sanding they will be ready for the second coat.

Billy was once again all smiles. He loves watching them work and having men enjoying spending time with him! Relationships --- lifelines!! Most of us just take them for granted. Not Billy!

They are planning on returning tomorrow to continue working on the dining room ceiling and the facia and soffit outside. Our hope is that the sun will return from behind the clouds but even if it doesn't -- the sun is still shining in all their hearts and anyone who steps on the property feels its warmth also!

Billy's Blessings; Day 1

Early this morning I was off to Lowes to pick up all the material I had ordered yesterday. The volunteers were on their way and ready to start both inside and outside. The orders were already pulled from the shelves and the tickets ready for my signature and within 10 minutes I was out the door and on my way to the church for day 1 orientation.

These men drove all the way from Hartsville, Indiana; about an hour and a half away. They didn't mind and even joked that some had not even eaten breakfast! But they were ready to get to work.

Immediately after the orientation we headed to Billy's and he was also waiting and ready to go. They got my truck of materials unloaded, which wasn't an easy task since they opted to work with 12' long sheetrock and it's a bear to handle, no matter how you do it. They were up for the task and before long it was inside the house and they were off to rent a lift to make the installation process a bit easier.

The men outside were ready to start putting up the insulation which goes underneath the vinyl siding. They had already removed all the old damaged siding yesterday and it would be loaded on my truck a bit later in the day.

I headed off to pick up the siding. It had to be ordered from someplace else and they made it so easy to get all the details accomplished. It was also loaded on the truck quickly and after lunch I would deliver it to the team.

At lunch time the team treated Billy to lunch at the local Steak and Shake and from the sounds of it they all had a really good time.

They came back and unloaded the siding and went straight to work. The first starter pieces went up and from there the only direction they were concerned with was upwards!

By mid afternoon the men inside had nearly all the sheetrock on the ceiling in the dining room and were determined to work late enough in the day to get the first coat of mud on. They were more than thankful that they had rented the lift and even found that to be a bit of a challenge since the room isn't all that large and manuevering was less than easy. But the smiles on their faces and the sound of all their laughter proved that the joy of the Lord was in their hearts and nothing was too difficult for them.

Billy was smiling from ear to ear and working away like a little worker ant. He had a magnet outside picking up nails from the roofers who put the new metal roof on a few months ago. From there he was here and there -- the man loves to clean! He told me today that his wife kept the house clean (she passed away in 2008) and he was determined to do the same! He also told me that this was incredible and he was having so much fun!

God had this team selected for this time and for this project -- His divine connection once again shining through and telling me that He has it all under control!

Here you can see the very first starter strips beginning to go up and Billy down by his basement garage picking up nails with his rolling magnet. You can also see the retaining wall on the left that has fallen in and how the one on the right is leaning. This team has plans to repair both!

Just an example of the smiles I was talking about! Priceless!

Even with the lift (the yellow thing) hanging sheetrock that is 12 feet in length is a job!

Pastor Randy had the job of cranking the lift as the others make sure it's in the right place. Tough to crank and look up at the same time!

The first pieces of siding are up. It may be an uphill climb but the guys were laughing saying they were getting too warm! This side of the house is on the west side and it was a very sunny day! But they also know this is Indiana and tomorrow the weather could be totally different! I told them they were good till the sun goes down! They laughed!!!!!

Awesome day for the volunteers, for Billy and for me! But even more awesome for God to see His people doing what He called them to do . . . help the people!

New mercies every morning

The two pictures below show the awesome job Monty did with the skirting on Michael's trailer! Most of it was donated from another trailer that had been relocated, the rest was purchased with the funds that came in from donating angels!

Yesterday the focus at Michael's was getting the ceilings painted. Michael's cousin, Cody was ready and waiting when I arrived with the painting supplies. Keith was on his way as soon as he finished at the car lot. His son is now driving age so the car Keith has been driving was passed down and Keith got the chance to get himself a new one! And even after all that (we all know what a hassle that can be) he came and worked at painting!

Rob also came and by the end of the day they had nearly all the painting completed. Keith will return this next weekend to finish the cut in -- he does such a great job that we gave the entire job to him!

I had to be in and out early as I still had to drop a work bench to our secretary and her husband in their new home. The rains didn't help things but it got done and I was on my way back home to spend the rest of the day with my mother, my aunt and my daughter and her family.

It was fun taking my mother and aunt to see my daughter's family's new house. She has worked so hard in decorating and it's just so beautiful!

We all got to enjoy a nice luncheon together and from there their family had plans with the kids and we headed out to do a bit of grocery shopping. By the time we got home it was time for them to head home. A great way to spend a cool and rainy day!

This morning Michael and Cody came to our church. Everyone was so excited to meet Michael and get the chance to put a face to all the work the've been hearing about. I know he was a bit embarrased when he was introduced but I think the warmth of the people crowded around him at the end of the service took the embarrassment away! He and Cody were still visiting when we left!

And now we are heading into a new week!

Tomorrow I will be getting a materials listing for Billy's house and the work will begin there on Tuesday morning! Pastor Randy and his church and his friends are going to take on the entire project! What a blessing! So they will start with replacing the ceiling in his dining room and then move outside to replace all the siding on one side of the house and repair both sides of what used to be retaining walls before the tornado. We are so thankful to Pastor Randy and Mark for taking on the whole thing and know Billy will have his socks blessed right off his feet --- as will the volunteers doing the work!

Another Angel?!

Yep -- another pair of angels came out of nowhere and made it possible for Monty to go and purchase the remaining skirting for Michael's new home! So early this morning he was headed to shop and got it all done by early this evening. He said it looks beautiful and completely transforms the look of the place.

I know what a good job he does, the perfectionist he is, and that God blessed his hands as he worked today.

The weather was perfect and now the skirting will further protect Michael from the cold and critters and just make it look like a real home!

We are so very grateful for this new pair of angels and once again thank them for their obedience when God put it on their hearts to give -- and to God for His perfect provision.

I am heading to Michael's first thing in the morning and will have pics for my next post. Tomorrow the focus will be on painting all the ceilings white. It is the final touch and will really make everything look crisp and clean. The walls are already to perfection so now let's have matching ceilings. I called Keith as he is our awesome cut - in man and he will also be there bright and early.

While Monty was finishing the skirting I was helping our church secretary and her family move out of their newly sold home. We packed box after box and loaded them into the bed of my truck and then went and unloaded them. I don't know how many trips we made but it was alot and we got alot done. I have no doubt that they will be working late into the night as they wanted to clean the house for the new incoming homeowners and there were still a few things to pack.

They also called Habitat for Humanity's local Restore and they came and picked up many great things that the family donated! Many other families will be blessed by these donations.

By evening we were both quite tired and yet fully enjoyed our day.

Tomorrow will bring my mother and aunt here for a nice visit. They want to see my daughter and son in law's new home and we also plan on treating ourselves to a nice lunch somewhere.

We hope all of you will be cheering for your favorite Super Bowl team this weekend. It's been fun for us, watching the local news - we live less than an hour from Indianapolis! Go teams!

An angel told me Michael is going to be getting his new flooring!!!!!!

This is the next BIG step in getting him closer to his brand new home!

Once again, God providing just what is needed right when it is needed. He's amazing!

Great Progress

The meeting this morning at Billy's with Mark and Pastor Randy was awesome! Both Billy and Pastor were happy to see one another again. Their smiles lit up the room. Pastor's church, Bloomington Baptist is going to take on the project of putting up the new dining room ceiling and also the replacing of the siding on the exterior of one side of his home. The recent high winds have taken a bit more of that siding off and it's such a blessing to be able to put our trust in one church and watch them bless Billy in ways he can't even imagine!

From there I was off to Michael's. It was a sight for sore eyes, mine, when I walked in and saw the ceiling fans all installed and the trim down the center of the family room. It's beautiful!

Today we had 2 new volunteers from our Vineyard church, Jeff and Karin. They focused their efforts on painting, topping off the edge where the walls meet the ceiling, making it a nice and clean line, and also painting the base trim that will be installed after all the flooring is in. They did a great job and it was nice to have new folks join us!

Keith was also working away another Saturday and helped finish off the wall trim. That line being perfectly straight is so important and he just has that gift of being able to take a paint brush and make it look so easy!

Rob returned by mid day. Bless his heart -- he had another job to do in the morning and still came to help out at Michael's! That servant heart spirit --- and I think he likes being there with all of us and laughing and having such fun. He spent his time mounting both of the wall mount sinks in the bathrooms. These mount directly on the wall and have nothing underneath them making it easy for Michael to roll freely and pull himself up and underneath the sinks. He got a kick out of deciding which faucet to put in which bathroom.

It was a busy day. It was a fun day. It was a day where Michael was smiling all day -- and that's priceless! It was a day of sharing and laughing and enjoying every step of the progress.

Oh yea -- I spent the day there installing the window trim and then getting the nail holes filled and touching it all up with paint. And if I do say so myself --- it was beautimous!!! :) I had fun actually getting in and doing some work myself and putting up trim is what I know and love to do. Monty was a dear and "loaned" me all his tools to get the job done. And he's not even that upset that I went off and left his nail gun and the hose to the compressor there!!!!!! Hopefully Rob noticed and will bring them to church tomorrow --- or else I'll be making another trip very soon!

We are moving forward and getting closer and closer . . . what we need now is the funding for Michael's flooring. That flooring must be installed before the kitchen cabinets and appliances, before the toilets and before the base trim. Basically everything else rides on the flooring funding coming in and getting installed. We already have the people ready to install, our church secretary, her daughter and husband volunteered for the job a long time ago. And we have others wanting to help them. We just need the funding to purchase it. We all know God has it all ready and we're excited to see where He has it coming from!!!

How great Thou art!!!!

I know it's been a few days since I've written. It just hasn't seemed like there's been alot going on!

Boy oh boy have I been wrong!!!!

First story:
As some of you know (and those that don't can go back to the blog archives) we spent the summer of 2008 working the floods in my hometown, Columbus, Indiana. There were over 3000 homes flooded and we were blessed to be able to leave Mississippi and park our camper behind the local AG church and get their long term recovery started. Since they had no experience in disaster relief they were open to any and all help.

At their 2nd meeting I was asked to supervise the case management committee. Case management is literally the heart beat of disaster relief. It is here that the homeowner finds their personal advocate, someone who will do whatever it takes to bring them through the recovery process. I was blessed to have nearly 20 case managers who had the heart and soul to take on any situation and go the extra mile.

The chairperson of the entire long term recovery was also the president of the local United Way. He (Doug) caught some "flack" for taking on both positions but was outstanding in balancing each one, along with his personal life. At our very first case management meeting (we had them weekly) he was in the background and I didn't even know who he was. At the end of the meeting I showed the video on Mike and Faye (you can also find this in the archives). I wanted to make sure each person knew just how important they were in this process. After the video Doug came to me and asked, "how is it that we are so fortunate to have you here?" I had to laugh and was a bit embarassed. I told him I was the fortunate one and it was all in God's hands. He then got a rather stern look on his face and told me "you can have your religion- and you can keep it." Ooopps!! It was a bit later that everyone told me Doug is an atheist!

Throughout the next 4 months Doug and I worked hand in hand and he was not only a blast to work with but he had such a big heart when it came to helping people! He would go the extra mile, spend the extra dollar that we didn't have and I continually told him that he couldn't be an atheist because God had given him such a servant heart! He would sort of smile and give no response.

After 4 months hurricane Ike hit Texas and we were asked to go there. Doug completely understood and even asked me to name my replacement. As I left we were both in tears but I knew they all knew what needed done and would get the job completed in record time! And off we went.

Then yesterday . . . a letter arrived addressed to me. It was from Doug. He is retiring from his position after over 17 years and one of the things he's done is name what he calls his "Special 100." These are 100 people who have had the most effect on his life over the past 17 plus years. And I am one of those 100!!!!!! I was shocked, honored and extremely humbled! I actually had to sit down and think about it.

God had placed me in that position -- at that time -- for His ultimate purpose! He worked through me and that thought is a bit daunting! I thank God for that honor and thank Doug for everything he did and is still doing. I know God isn't done with him yet -- and before long Doug will know too.

There will be a special ceremony in April and yes --- I will be there with bells on --- and my cross around my neck --- the very same one he would always look at and smile!!!!!!

Then today:

As you know, we are trying desperately to get 2 homes completed from the tornado damage here back in May of last year. Billy's house just needs his dining room ceiling sheetrocked and finished and some siding outside repaired and a retaining wall rebuilt. The old ceiling was torn out by my college volunteers months ago but getting it rebuilt has been tough.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine, Mark, who you've seen pics of painting at Michael's trailer a couple of weeks ago -- called me to tell me his Baptist church was going to go through disaster relief training. At that point it dawned on me that I should ask them to take on the project of Billy's house so they could get some real hands on training. Mark told me he would be happy to speak with Pastor Randy about it and get back with me.

This afternoon Mark called me and asked if he and Pastor could meet me at Billy's in the morning as they would like to do the project!!!! Praise the Lord!
I had to call Billy's daughter who lives north of us (Billy doesn't hear well on the phone so she handles everything since her mother passed away a couple of years ago). She said it would be fine to go in the morning and was so thankful that someone had taken on the project. She asked what church it was --- and burst into tears when I told her! She grew up in that very church, with that very Pastor -- and was even married there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her father had been a deacon and her parents faithful attenders until a few years ago when the church split and they just sort of stopped attending!

Now --- do you have the Holy Ghost goose bumps like I got?????

She was thrilled beyond words and right then and there I knew why we had been "waiting" for so long to get this project done!

God's timing is always perfect! He's not late, like we think -- and He has just the right people for just the right project for just the right time!

I immediately called Mark back so he could let Pastor Randy know ahead of time. God has a great plan! What satan meant for destruction God took and turned into such an amazing blessing -- and we have no idea where He will take it from here!

One thing I could probably bet on --- Billy isn't going to be a lonely widow sitting in his home on the hill for much longer!

So the past 2 days have spoken volumes to me! God has me right where He wants me and all I have to do is simply obey when I "hear" His direction! He has it all planned and timed, it's not my schedule -- it's His!

It's such an honor and also so humbling to be just little ole me being used by such an amazing and awesome God!

So . . . how is He using you?

No Plan B for This!!

It all started last night --- the freezing rains! It was coming down so hard we could hear it hitting the roof of the house.

By the time I took the dogs out to head to bed the front door was frozen to the point of not being able to get it open.

This morning ----- a very icy winter wonderland where no one is moving!

The front door was more than frozen, I actually had to take hot water and pour over the handle to make it work.

The front deck (faces north) is a solid sheet of ice and all I can do is literally sit down and scoot across to get to the edge where I can then step into the ice crusted grass. No way one can go down the steps. One of the dogs tried it and it's a wonder he didn't break all 4 of his legs in his nasty fall!

The truck doors are beyond trying to get open! The sand truck came through our subdivision and he almost couldn't make the curve and up the hill in front of us!

No one else is moving!

So . . . needless to say I will not make it to Michael's house today to work on the trim!

And I may need my daughter to come and pick me up this evening to babysit the grandkids!

But . . . not to worry . . . this is Indiana and by tomorrow evening we are supposed to be under a severe thunderstorm warning!!!!!!!!!!

Better, Belated and Boldly Standing . . .

My mom is better! I went to visit her yesterday and was happy to see she is doing better. She even walked to the barn lot with me for a quick visit with one of my brothers.

Tuesday was my dad's 81st birthday so when I went yesterday I brought a small cake. He never cares much about anything written on it because he removes all the icing before he eats it! No wonder he's so thin!!!!

And surprise --- one of my daughters came over while I was there! She was in town on business and brought her lunch to Mom's and we all had a fun and quick visit! God's perfect timing!

I also talked with Michael today and that's where the "boldly standing" part of my blog title comes in. We are at the end of the funding we had and are boldly standing on the promise of God to provide what we need right when we need it! Last Saturday Rob was the only volunteer who went to help so today I sent an email to our church secretary asking her to send an email to everyone she has on her mailing list updating them on our plans for this Saturday and our needs. Scripture boldly tells us "we don't have because we don't ask" so . . . we are asking!

We are at the point where we need additional funding to complete the skirting. Monty got nearly 3/4ths of it donated but we need a bit more to finish the job.

We are also in need of funding for the flooring. That is our next step. We are putting in the wood flooring that is easy to install and will be just what Michael and his wheelchair need to roll freely throughout the entire house.

And then the next step will be installing the kitchen cabinets and counter tops.

We are getting so close and each day Michael has to stay in his old trailer and haul wood back and forth just to stay a little bit warm is getting more and more difficult.

Reaping what we sow

One of the texts Pastor Dave used in todays message.

I came from a farming family, actually generations of farmers. This text has always carried a double meaning for me because of that.

In both contexts if one doesn't plan, cultivate and finish the season there is no harvest.

The most important principles in both are repetition and consistency.

As a child, year after year, our family life followed the cycles of planting, cultivating and then harvesting the fields of corn and soybeans. You did over and over again. Repeating, making a few tweeks here and there to hopefully improve the harvest, one step at a time.

In the Bible Jesus referred to farmers and farming many times. For them, no planting or cultivating meant no harvest which meant no food. We are spoiled because all we have to do is go to the grocery and possibly pay higher prices.

But today, what are we "planting?" What is that thing that God has called us to do, to be involved in, to make a difference in, to cultivate, to take care of -- to harvest?

What kind of actions are we taking to bring that "thing" to harvest?

Maybe I am one of the fortunate ones because I know what the "desire of my heart" is. (Psalm 37:4)

It's always been there. I've always known, But I haven't always cultivated or taken care of it. But it's always been there. Simply --- help those in need!

Sounds simple . . . but . . .

This morning Pastor Dave gave me alot to think about! Am I following through on my actions on a daily basis to bring in my harvest? No.

I need to remember that the harvest is worth the price of persistance. It's worth doing the right things over and over again. It's worth the persistance, the consistency, the repetition!

God has shown me over and over again in these past years just how important my harvest is! I've seen it in the eyes of the homeowners, I've felt it in their hugs, I've heard it in their voices and seen it in their eyes as streams of tears of joy flow down their cheeks.

This calling God has given me --- the one He has given you --- it IS worth whatever it takes!!!!

Give it some thought today . . . and then take what God speaks to you and put it into action!

I know I added a couple of things to my "to do" list for tomorrow!

Going Home

Many thanks to all of you who have been praying for my mother!

I spoke with her this morning and she feels well enough to go home today! She sounded much better and is ready to go home --- and crash on the couch with her beloved dog, Humphrey! No doubt he won't leave her side! Too bad he's not trained to go in the kitchen and fix meals for my dad!! :)

She will need some time to rest and heal but is on the mend and we are so grateful to all of you for your thoughts and prayers!

Today we will be attending the funeral of our neighbor, Rudy. Over 2 1/2 years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and told he only had 6 months to live. He fought the fight and went home to see Jesus this week. Today is a celebration of his life! I know there was a celebration when he got to heaven and I just home he said hello to my grandma for me!

Again, thanks to all of you and may you stay safe and healthy and in the arms of Jesus!

Update on my Mom

Mom is still quite sick but a bit better. Her doctors have diagnosed her with this really nasty intestinal virus that has been going around.

She is weak and in pain but hopefully on the mend.

Very Personal Request

I just got word that my mother has been hospitalized!

She has been having gastro and stomach and headache problems for a few days and this morning was in terrible pain. My dad took her to the ER and they have decided to keep her for further testing.

Please keep both her and my dad in your prayers.

God is the perfect healer and I am placing her into His Almighty hands!

God's "due date"

Bible study this morning brought some things to mind. Indulge me while I share them with you.

We set our course by the words out of our mouth and although you can't "hear" me, you can hear me! I need to re-set my course!

Ezekiel 22:30 (NIV) says, "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none."

This scripture brought a flooding of thoughts . . .

Back in March of 2007 we built Ms Faye's house -- stick built, fully finished, furnished and landscaped in 5 days!!!!! You can go back in the archives of this blog and read if you aren't familiar with this story or haven't seen the video.

At that time we had been told by everyone, even our piers, that this could not be done! Even the guys on the TV show take 7 days! But God had spoken to me, very clearly, and I knew in my "knower" that this could - and would - be done! That knowing kept me going through all the obstacles, through all the words of the unbelievers, through it all, to the end - and even then through the obstacles that popped up on the day of the reveal and house blessing.

Moving forward . . . early last summer when the tornadoes struck Alabama and we gathered relief supplies and made 2 trips to deliver them to the people in need. On our 2nd trip back home once again God spoke to me - loud and clear - IGO Disaster Relief was to be "the" organization through which the Assembly of God churches could "funnel" their volunteers and funds in the event of a disaster.

In disaster relief the Catholics have Catholic Charities, the Lutherans have Lutheran Disaster Relief, the Presbyterians have Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Baptists have their Disaster Relief, even Billy Graham has Operation Blessing and his son Franklin has Samaritan's Purse. Everyone works together, everyone sits at the same table with the same goal of helping the people and the only way you can tell who is from where is by their tshirts!

But no one is there to represent the Assemblies of God churches, one of the largest denominations in the country! Yes, Convoy of Hope is mainly supported by the AG churches but as for having a long term disaster relief organization . . .

We have been told that there is one in the pipeline but nothing yet.

As we were driving and talking about all we had seen and experienced God made all of this very clear to me and told me that WE were to stand in that place!

When we got home I made some contacts and the response was always the same, "a woman trying to make it in the Assemblies churches is a tough road", "you aren't "Assemblies" missionaries so therefore . . ." "it's just not possible". . . on and on and on ---everything against what God has just told me to do! Every avenue I tried only led me into a brick wall. And I admit here and now that I let that stop me - stop what God had told me to do!

It took this morning and that scripture to rattle my brain once again and stir my heart!

Do I know how it is to all go together? No. Do I have a big master plan all ready to put into place? No. Do I have any support at all? No!

But God . . .

What I do know is that I need to start moving forward with what I was told to do. Before we know it we will be into the tornado season with hurricane season right on it's heels.

Assemblies of God churches need to know IGO Disaster Relief is here -- ready and waiting to put their volunteers to work, to accept their funding and to guide and educate them with both!

I have learned over the years that God's plan might not be the "logical" way but it is unique to me- to each one of us. All we have to do is look at the Bible --- would you think it was logical to take mud and spit and mix them together to bring sight to a blind man? The Bible is packed full of the truths of God and His promises!

So . . . this morning lit the spark in my heart and got my mind to thinking once again -- thinking on the right track.

I would ask for prayer about all of this --- God has the plan and all we need to do is listen to His direction and then act!

2 BIG Days! 2 GOOD Days!

Yesterday was a very busy day! I helped my daughter and son in law get most everything moved into their new home! It was also quite the experience since the workers were trying to still get things done, things that should have been done weeks ago, and thus most of the things we moved had to be stored in their garage!

I don't know how many trips we made, I don't know how many times I lifted boxes and things into and out of my truck, I don't know how many trips I made going upstairs and downstairs -- but it was a great day and even though things had to be "rearranged" a bit and they couldn't stay there all night because the water meter wasn't in and thus no water -- the day was a big one and it felt good to work late and get the new kitchen and pantry all arranged! As the 3 of us sat on the family room floor eating pizza right out of the box we laughed as they remembered they did exactly the same thing the first night in what is now their old house!

The movers were to come this morning to get the bigger things and I have not talked with them today to see how things are going but the "no news is good news" is what I will believe till I can stop by tomorrow.

This morning also started quite early for me. I was up and out and headed to Terry and Cheryl's to pick up all the trim for Michael's house. This family is filled with angels as they donated all the trim!!!!! My truck was weighed down with most everything we will need! They even had the red flag to hang off the end since I had 6 feet of trim hanging off the end of my tailgate!!!! I got to visit very quickly with them but will have more time when we all get together at my parent's house a week from now to celebrate the many birthdays in this month.

From there it was another hour on the road to deliver the trim to Michael's. It was great to pull up and see Monty and Rob working on the skirting, Keith working on installing light fixtures and Mark doing what he is an expert at -- interior priming and painting! I laughed at the thought that when I first met Mark probably over 20 years ago he had a paint brush and roller in his hands!!! He worked miracles and the inside is absolutely beautiful!!!!!

Monty had about half of the skirting complete when I left mid afternoon and is tossing around the idea of returning tomorrow to finish since the weather is so nice and we need that thing buttoned up before any further cold weather comes in! He can praise and worship while he's finishing skirting! :)

Two very busy and very awesome days! Seeing the smiles on my kids faces, seeing the smile on Michael's face -- and seeing the love of God and His blessings being poured out on everyone involved everywhere ----------- priceless!!!!!!!

Every Which Way

Just a couple of days ago the snow was blowing so hard it looked like a blizzard outside. Tomorrow the temps are supposed to be in the mid 50's!

When you have weather like this combined with a Chinese Crested Hairless dog and find a sweater sale at Walmart you have one very happy dog!!!!! Now come on -- I know you can see that big smile all over his face!!! :)

As you read this blog it will seem to be "all over the place" . . . but thus is my brain today!

Michael had an angel show up yesterday. Mark, a painter friend that I have know for years, showed up and put the finishing touches on the walls. I didn't know he was going, Michael didn't either, but just when we were a bit "stressed" about getting those walls just rigght --- God stepped in and let us know (once again) that He has is all under control. Mark will be back on Saturday and will not only top off the walls but will most likely finish the priming and most of the painting! Thank you Lord!

Today I was able to get the bath lights, the kitchen light and the outside lights for Michael. They can be installed on work day this Saturday. Thank you again, Lord.

Tomorrow I will be helping my daughter and son in law move into their new home. That is -- as long as the final inspection (in 15 minutes) will bring about the certificate of occupancy! All the plans are in motion, the boxes are packed, the walls are bare, the kids will be at their other grandma's for the night, even the dog is taken care of --- all hinges on this inspection! I think I will thank the Lord ahead of time!!??

I popped on Facebook to find that my childhood best friend (and still is) needing some pretty powerful prayers! Seems her father had a severe stroke and her daughter had a miscarriage -- all in the same day!!!! Her dad is doing a bit better but the daughter is struggling! Let's all hold all of them up in prayer! Love you Denise!

Saturday I will be traveling (early morning) to our friends, Terry and Cheryl's, to pick up the trim for Michael's house. They are donating it!!!!! Remember -- they are the parents of 10 children and they are donating to Michael!!!!! Isn't God amazing!!!!! I look forward to seeing them again although I must make it a quick trip so I can get back and get it delivered to Michael so he can start staining and finishing it. That's okay because we will get to see them and spend a wonderful evening with them next Saturday night when we all go to my parent's house to celebrate all the birthdays in the month of January! (my dad will be 81) Should be a fantastic time!!!

Our next door neighbor was taken by ambulance to the hospital yesterday afternoon. Rudy has been battling with cancer for a very long time and when they took him out on the stretcher my heart sank! I know the man can't weigh 75 pounds -- no exaggeration! They were hoping to do something to strengthen him -- we know prayer is the best means of strength so please cover him also! Cancer is so mean!

Don and I are still waiting to hear from Monroe and his team. Waiting isn't something I am very good at and definitely something I don't like to do! But God and His perfect timing . . . so I wait anyway!

Our dear friend Del called me this morning with a friend also in trouble. Seems they are tangled in the web of alcoholism and jail and that nasty merry go round and are in need of help, guidance and prayers. They are young and searching . . . let's pray for them - for guidance that leads them straight to God - the perfect healer and miracle worker!

I have an aunt that isn't doing well either, physically. She and her husband moved into a retirement community just a few weeks ago and the whole family thought she would flourish there. Seems he is but she isn't. She is nearly 89 years old -- but . . .

I tried to tell you --- thoughts scattered all over the place --- welcome to my brain!

Steps forward

Now that the holidays are in the past and we can move forward --- yes, when you work in disaster relief the holidays can sort of get in the way -- today was the first day of moving forward!

Back to Bible study and what a refreshing morning that was -- I really needed every word!

Monty was back working on rebuilding trailers and as long as he can stay dry and warm who knows how long he'll be working! He was excited to go this morning since we went to the doctor and got some ear drop meds to clear up the outer ear infection!

Michael gave me the good news that he and his family got the extra sheetrock taken back and were able to purchase 5 gallons of primer. They have all been working away and have almost everything primed. They also got excited and painted the master bedroom and are really happy with the color. Pastor Martie is a retired interior designer and she did the color selections so everyone is excited to see and as long as Michael is happy -- we are all happy!

This Saturday's work day will hopefully find both Monty and our contractor friend, John, outside skirting his trailer. The temps look good and this will really make a visible difference as well as a warmth difference with his home. Hopefully we will have enough volunteers to finish any painting needing done and can start installing the wall mounted bathroom sinks and closing up the electrical outlets and switches too.

It's exciting to move forward and Michael is so ready that he is actually taking funding that he usually uses for wood to heat his home and putting those funds into things for the house. He smiled as he told me about how the wind was pouring through his curtains these past few days. We've had winds in excess of 25 mph and he has felt the brash cold coming in on all sides! We need to get this home completed and blessed as soon as possible so he can know what it's like to be warm - without wood!

As we were discussing the cost of paint after Bible study Pastor Martie's daughter overheard our conversation and here she came -- and covered the entire cost of the paint!!!! Once again God providing just what we need right when we need it! He's been that way the entire time, never too late and always right on time! It's awesome to see His Almighty hand work right before our eyes! Thank you Lord!

As for Don's house -- Monroe is still working on trying to gather his team of volunteers and should be able to make progress now that the holidays are past! The weather is a real issue and we are praying that we can match up a team of volunteers with the perfect weather they will need to remove his old and more than destroyed roof and put on a brand new on and stop the rain and snow from pouring inside!!! Please keep this entire situation in your prayers!!

So forward we go! It's exciting to be getting closer and closer with Michael's. It's exciting to watch God work and we are so thankful for every blessing He has bestowed on all of us!

Looking Back . . . and Ahead

This is what it looked like around here 2 days after Christmas! And today the temps are to reach the mid 50's!

The contrasts remind me of this past year! Is it possible that we've reached the end of another year? I remember when everyone was wondering what would happen when we reached the year 2000 and now that is 11 years behind us!

Some of us might be quite sad today, thinking back on this past year and how we wish things could have been different - better. How we could have been different - better.

Others of us might be very happy today, glad the old year is ending and looking forward to the chance to start it all over and hopefully this time have it be better.

Either way -- depending on our moods and circumstances -- there is one thing that never changes and one thing we should be shouting from the roof tops --- God is good, God loves us with an unconditional love and He never changes!!!!!!

In January I started a reading program that would have me read through the Bible in a year. It's one of those things that I had always meant to do -- and then just never did. I guess I thought that since I spent 8 years in the Lutheran school with both religion and memory work as additional letter grades that I sort of "knew it all" -- even though I had never read the entire Book! Amazing how ridiculous we can be in our thinking, isn't it!

This morning --- I did it! I finished the entire plan and must say that I am quite pleased that God gave me the ability to stick with it! I made the promise to myself that I would begin each day with reading His Word and doing so not only changed each day -- it changed my life! The insights and revelations have been life changing!

The very last verse that was on my reading plan this morning was this, "Praise the Lord."

How appropriate for the ending of one year and the beginning of another! It says it all, it covers everything, it leaves nothing out and if we all really and truly think about our lives (good and bad) we will realize that it's the MOST important thing we can do to both end this year and start the new one!

From both Monty and I --- we praise and thank God for each and every one of you and want to both close this year and start the new one with His promise for all of us; "Jesus is coming for you, dear one. This is a promise your heart can rest in fully as you watch, listen and serve. The rooms are ready, the gate is open. He can't wait to wrap us in His arms!"

Tough ending

Ending this year has proved to be tough for both of us -- physically.

I have been feeling bad since the day before Christmas with the past 3 days being the roughest. I tried so desperately to help Monty not catch "it" but seems I have failed. Even sleeping in the other bedroom hasn't spared him!

He missed work yesterday and although seemed a bit better last night today is a new day and . . . everything seems to have settled in his ear! Home again.

Today I feel a bit better and feel like I might be on the mend.

Neither of us do "sick" very well and both of us at the same time???? Not fun!!!!

But . . . as they say . . . tomorrow is another day and with the help of prayer we WILL get through this crud and be back up and running on God's path soon!

Oh yea --- only 2 more days and I will have read the entire Bible this past year! I had a plan from our church and with His help -- I am almost there! Amazing insights along the way and I can't wait to start all over on January 1 -- with a new reading plan!

Sputtered to a stop

Yep --- I was headed south to Michael's to exchange his left over sheetrock for primer yesterday when plans took a change.

As I was traveling along the highway enjoying the peace and quiet and lost in my thoughts -- all of a sudden my truck started sputtering and spitting and feeling like it had no power. Within seconds I realized I needed to get off the highway and out of the way of traffic. I pulled over at the stop light just a few feet in front of me and by that time the truck had completely died and I coasted to a stop. I tried to restart it but . . . nothing doing!

My first call was to Michael to let him know I wouldn't make it there. The next call was to Monty. And the next call was to the towing company. Just as I got off the phone with the towing company and knowing it would take them almost 30 minutes to get to me -- Michael called me back. He asked me if I had 2 fuel tanks on my truck? Yes. He told me to flip the switch to the other tank and then try and start it. Bingo! Started right up! He told me that the fuel pump on the other tank had gone out. Wow!

So I quickly called the towing company back and cancelled my request. Then I called Monty, who was already on his way to me, and told him I was headed to the closest gas station because my other tank was less than a quarter full. When I got this truck one thing Monty had told me was to never let a tank get completely empty before changing to the other one. Good advice! Just in case of an emergency, he said. Thank goodness I took his advice to heart!

So I didn't make it to Michael's but I did make it to the gas station and home. Thank you Michael -- my engine angel! He didn't get his primer but that will hopefully happen later this week.

The other problem is that I am sick as a dog with a nasty sore throat and cold! I didn't feel well on Saturday or Christmas day and tried to fight it . . . and am still fighting. But yesterday went downhill fast and today is the same. So with all the snow falling and the way I feel --- it's a day where I am staying home, resting (which is very difficult for me) and praying this won't last long and that the scratchy ears that Monty had when he went to work this morning will also be prayed away with all your prayers added to ours!

God sometimes changes our plans but one thing I have learned --- I'd much rather follow His plans than mine! He knows what's best and even though we may not understand the whole thing -- it's all about trust!

Wonderful Christmas

You can see by the looks on their faces that they loved Christmas! Luke not only got enough Lego pieces to keep him building forever - when he opened the latest and greatest Wii game package I'm surprised you didn't hear his screams of joy out in California! It was a great day spent with all my kids and kid in laws and grandkids! I have no doubt Jesus was smiling as He looked down and saw everyone sharing a joy that could only come from Him!

From the left -- my son and daughter in law, my daughter and son in law, and my other daughter and her fiance'. Where have the years gone?

Yesterday was spent at my parent's house also celebrating by eating and opening gifts and playing games and even more laughter boucing off the walls. I guess no matter how old we are in years it's a special part of Christmas that lets all of us awaken the kid in us again!

It is our prayer that all of you had some time to feel that special joy that comes from knowing the love God must have for each of us to send His own Son to save us!!!!! Wow!!! What a thought!

And today it's back to work for Monty and I am on my way to Michael's to pick up the sheetrock we had left over and exchange it for primer. Michael himself can start that process and I even have a painting pole that will enable him to reach the ceilings! He is so excited to see things coming along so well. Next comes the painting, the flooring, the cabinet designs and then . . . oh how close it is . . . I know he can feel it!

And Don is still waiting on word from Monroe and the Amish. As soon as we get these holidays behind us . . .

Blessed Christmas

All of the Angel Tree deliveries are made and the gifts are under the trees. At the home of the last visit I made -- the gifts I brought were the only gifts under the tree -- and Mom said no more would be added. Thanks so much for all who participated in Angel Tree. You made it possible for all those children to smile and think of their incarcarated parent on Christmas morning and know that even though they aren't there -- their parent loves them -- and so does Jesus!

Our gifts are now all purchased and wrapped. Monty delivered the ones to his mother and step dad yesterday.

All (well, almost all) of my cooking and baking is done. I have a couple of last minute touches to my salads tomorrow morning before we head off to my daughter's to have Christmas with all my kids and their spouses/fiances and grandchildren. It's always so exciting to see the looks on everyone's face since we all toss our names in the hat and draw for gift buying. We take time for each person to open theirs before the next person is allowed to do the same. It makes it alot more fun and always brings back memories of Christmas "back then."

Tomorrow night Monty and I will be heading to church. Our home church doesn't have a service so we have decided to go the local Catholic church -- and I know we'll need to arrive early as they will pack it full. He has never been to a Catholic service and this church is the oldest and largest one here in town so we are really looking forward to their service.

Sunday morning we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus in our home church. Pastor Dave says it will be a bit more traditional and litergical than we usually have -- but that's what Christmas is all about. That's the way I grew up, singing the old familiar hymns and hearing the scriptures read from Luke 2 and just resting in that Spirit of Peace.

From there we will be spending the rest of the day with my family. No doubt there will be way too much food, too many gifts and laughter loud enough to hear across the road. To me, it's what "coming home for Christmas" is all about.

It is our hope and prayer that all of you will be celebrating the birth of our Saviour, our Wonderful Counselor, our King of Kings and Lord of Lords in a way that will bring a smile to your face and peace and warmth to your heart.

Angel Tree

Each Christmas our church is a part of something awesome -- it's called Angel Tree.

On our Christmas tree are little pieces of paper in the shape of angels. Each has the name of a child who has a parent incarcerated. Members pull a name/names from the tree and provide gifts for them. There are suggestions and sizes on the papers to give them guidance. After all the gifts are purchased and brought to church where they can be wrapped, our church hosts a big party for the kids. That party was this Sunday. It's always such fun for the kids and brings a piece of their parents to their heart.

For those who are unable to make the party -- I get to be the big red sleigh (with wheels) and deliver their gifts to their homes.

Yesterday was one of my delivery days. God never ceases to amaze me at how He works and how He cares!

My first stop was way, way, way, way out in the boonies! I thought I would never get there and when I did . . . the grandmother had warned me about the drive way but no warning could prepare me for that driveway!!!! She lived back off the road and the holes in that drive would bury a small VW! I may have a big truck but it's not 4 wheel drive so there was no way I could attempt it. I packed the bag over my shoulder and the other one on the other arm and headed off for a "jaunt" up (yes, up hill) the driveway. She met me at the porch and would not allow me to come inside -- she was too embarrassed at how things looked! But all she could do was thank me, bless me and praise Jesus!!! She is the grandmother raising 3 kids while her daughter is incarcerated!! What an angel she is!

As I left there and headed to my next stop I just couldn't get her off my mind. God wasn't done with me or her yet -- I just didn't know that.

I arrived at the next stop and this was also a grandmother raising 2 children! Made me appreciate my own children a bit more, that's for sure! And to thank God for keeping them on the right path, not only as they grew up - but now also!

My first grandmother had called me a bit earlier asking if there might be any "left over things" from the party for a friend of hers. She explained the situation to me -- another heart wrencher -- and that this little 3 year old boy wasn't going to have anything under his tree for Christmas! Now I don't know about you -- but in my book that's just wrong! We didn't have "left overs" but as always - God stepped in and now this little boy will have some cool toys, an outfit of clothes and a pair of pajamas to open on Christmas morning!

And this morning -- all my Bible studies for the day talked about was helping the poor, giving to those who need to see His love in action, being and doing what God called us to do! I love how He confirms each thing He asks us to do!

So . . . I am challenging EACH ONE of you to find someone who isn't as fortunate as you this Christmas! You won't have to look far and they won't be hard to find! Then . . . pray about what God would have you do to make that situation a bit better -- atleast for this Christmas! And after He has told you ---- DO IT!!!!! Be the angel in someone else's life -- be the hands and feet of Jesus and instead of telling someone about His love --- show them!!!!!!!

A "roof top" Merry Christmas from John!!!!!

An update on Michael: Rob went out yesterday along with Pastor Jan and the first tape coat is on the ceilings and the walls. The walls could be ready for primer by the end of the week or the first of next week! Go Pastor!!!!!

We ended up with 7 pieces of sheetrock left over so as soon as the weather allows (and I have men to help lift and load) I will head to Michael's and get those back to Lowes so I can turn that refund money into money for the primer.

Priming is a job Michael can do alot of on his own. He can even take a long painting pole and reach the ceilings! He wants to be more involved and we are coming into alot of areas where he can work day and night if he wants to!

With Christmas being this weekend and New Years next . . . we may not have alot of volunteers but that's the way it should be. This is the time of year for family and Michael should be focused on that also.

But let these holidays get past us . . . and look out here we come . . . getting closer and closer to "home" in a new sense of the word!!!!

For Jack in Jersey and his friend who would like to do the kitchen --- we will be ready as soon as the walls are painted and the flooring is installed. We want to put the cabinets on top of the flooring so you will be next in line ---- get ready!!!!

For the rest of you --- please remember to keep this project --- and Don's in your prayers. Most likely it will also be after the holidays before Monroe and his team of Amish can get started on Don's. We appreciate your prayers and ask that you keep them coming!!!!!

Gift Wrap Day

Today is the day where our Vineyard Church sets up a large (huge) station at our local mall and wraps gifts for absolutely FREE! It's enough to make the best of folks smile and dance!!!!!

Yes, you read right --- free! We don't even take donations! It's our time to give back, in a very small way, for all God has blessed us with.

But . . . as usual . . . someone leaked the news to satan and he was at the door and waiting for Susie even before she arrived to get set up this morning!

We always have the same set up -- 8 tables and a couple of chairs. Upon arrival this morning there were 4 tables! Supposedly there has been a "change in policy" but no one informed us of this change so Susie has 9 workers lined up in 2 hour shifts from 8 am this morning through 10pm tonight -- with 8 wrapping stations! And only 4 tables!

To top it all off --- Pastor Dave (her dad) is down sick and not able to be there at all!

So . . . some kind folks headed back to church to bring 4 of our own tables (which the mall may or may not agree with once they come and take a look and make sure it's not too crowded) and the wrapping is underway.

My thoughts ----- there must be some extra special, over the top, blessings lined up for today or satan would be focussing his nastiness elsewhere!

My other thought --- satan --- you lose!!!!!! I've read the end of the Book and sorry but you'll just not spoil this day or the plans the Lord has so you might as well pack up your bag of nasty tricks and GET AWAY from all of us!!!!!

And oh yea ---- get your sickly hands off Pastor Dave as well!!! He is a man of God and you will NOT stop his annointing!!!!

All Closed In

Yep --- Michael's sheetrocking is done!!!!! No more seeing through walls. The view you have here is as you step inside the front door and look to your left. Where the green board is -- that's the kitchen area. The refrigerator will set just left of the white bumpout area. In the corner will be a small counter top. To the left of that corner will be the stove, a small cabinet and then the sink area with a bar extending out around 8 feet from the wall. The bar will extend from the area where the green board and the white board meet. You can also catch a glimpse of the small hallway that leads to the master bedroom and master bathroom.

It's so exciting to see all the walls and ceilings in place! We've all waited a long time for this but to Michael it's seemed even longer!

Pastor Jan will begin the taping and mudding process tomorrow and as soon as he is done we can start priming!

Each day we get closer and closer! Each day God brings more and more blessings. Today I received an email from someone out of state who wants to send Michael a special gift and needed his address. Miracle after miracle -- God providing what we need right when we need it!

So be sure and stay tuned . . . as Monroe still works on scheduling the Amish to come and work on Don's and we move forward with Michael's --- God moving at His perfect timing!

Homeland Security

Happy Monday to all.

This morning Homeland Security paid a visit to Don's house. This is good news!

FEMA wasn't given enough information for them to substantiate coming into the area after the tornadoes and Don doesn't qualify for an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan since he lost his job after the tornadoes, his only hope of any funding was the grant from the state of Indiana. Today, with the visit of the inspector we were told that he does qualify and will be getting the loan! Even though it's only $5,000 that will take us a long way in the rebuilding!!!! What great news! It may take 8 weeks to get here but that's okay. Catholic Charities can help out in the meantime and as soon as we get word from Monroe that the Amish are scheduled we will be ready to start!

I also talked with our own Pastor Dave and he assured me the Amish are more than welcome to stay at our church -- and they are going to furnish all the coffee they can drink! I am not a coffee drinker but from what I hear -- they have the best ever!!!!

And the YMCA will make their showers available for them to shower at the end of their work days so we are ready and waiting.

It's times like this that the holidays just sort of get in my way -- not complaining -- just saying how it is when we're in the field and focused on rebuilding lives by rebuilding homes!

It's a good Monday!!!!

Rockin' Saturday

The man is a machine when it comes to hanging sheetrock! John is a contractor who is used to working jobs that he bids out -- he gives the client a price and no matter how long it takes to do the work - it's the same price. So when it comes to working --- time is money --- and he has no time to waste! With the help of Rob's lift they were able to put up the 12 foot pieces of ceiling sheetrock with ease.

The tail gate of John's truck says it all! And to save you the time of looking up that scripture, "Seek the Kingdon of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need." Amen to that! He's doing just that with Michael's rebuild.

It's always such a blessing to have a father and son team come and volunteer. Keith and Jonathon are amazing. Most teens would have more than a little trouble learning and then taking correction from their fathers. Not this team. I have so enjoyed watching Jonathon grow up. I remember the first time he and his dad came to Mississippi for a week. Jonathon was only 11 years old and not at all impressed with any of the work needing done. The second day he started out by traveling with Monty and I. After feeding him a good breakfast and stopping back by the job his dad and the team were working on (gutting a house) he managed to get into the swing of it and as most boys are -- he found it fun to do some demolition work! He is learning so much by listening to his dad and I see his heart grow and change and want to reach out and help others! What an example both of them are for the rest of the world!

Schel, who provided and installed the brand new heating and air system, came back to help out again today. And for the first time --- he wasn't underneath the trailer! He actually got to come inside where it was warm and helped hang sheetrock! In this picture you can see the yellow lift that helps get the sheetrock to the ceilings. Micheal is underneath cranking it up as they direct. No one is allowed to just sit back and watch -- even if you are in a wheelchair!! :)

Monty and John were the only ones who couldn't enjoy the new heating system. They were working outside, on top of the trailer, rebuilding the new vent for that system. Each was dressed for the occasion and got alot of hard work done. The old vent had to come out and the new one installed and sealed properly. Alot of scraping old "goo" and putting on new "goo." They got it done and I guarantee there won't be leaks around that vent!

It was a great day -- a day that had Michael smiling from ear to ear -- a day he had waiting for since we started this project. And once again -- the dollar amount that had been donated just this week was the exact dollar amount we needed to do the job! Chaulk it up to yet another miracle in a long line of them already -- and I know there are many more to come!

To those men who came out on this really cold day and spread warmth that can't be measured with the thermometer -- God bless you for your hearts of service and your obedience to follow them!

Michael's will be transformed tomorrow --- sheetrock will be going up quickly! We've got some pros on the schedule and it will be awesome!

Don and I are still waiting to hear an arrival date of Monroe and his team of Amish experts. Could be as early as this Monday and then it could be next week.

Holidays make scheduling difficult but . . . God's perfect timing!

Delay on one end, forward on another

Late on Saturday I received a phone call from Monroe telling me one of their warehouses in Illinois caught fire and he was on his way to assess the damage.

Yesterday I heard from him again - major damage! This means he will not be able to get here this week so Don's is delayed until next week. With all the rain over the past couple of days I imagine Don is nearly floating in his family room and hopefully the weather will cooperate for a couple of days late next week and we can get the Amish here and a new roof -- and then start inside! Please keep this entire situation and all the people involved in your prayers.

As for Michael's -- we have rounded the bend!!! There is light at the end of the tunnel! The heat is working and on and there is sheetrock inside and today Michael and a couple of his family plan on starting to hang the ceilings! It's the bend we've been waiting for. Now the closing up can begin, it starts to look more and more like a house and the excitement builds! This Saturday we will be hanging sheetrock all over the place -- thanks to enough funding that just came to us today at Bible study!! God is providing exactly what we need right when we need it -- nothing ahead of time. All the more reason we are standing on pure faith every step of the way! And it's awesome! The smile on Michael's face this morning was priceless and was evidence of the true joy of the Lord!

The day he's waited for . . . arrived today!

Yes, today was the day! Michael has been waiting for sheetrock since day one and today I loaded up my truck with ceiling sheetrock! You can see by the smile on his face that it was a day worth waiting for! With Rob's lift the job will be much smoother and easier!

Today was another work day and thankfully we had quite the team of volunteers! John, Keith and his son Jonathon and Rob from Vineyard and Schel and Sus from Stonegate all made it a day of work and laughter and love!

The first task was to make use of the younger men and their younger and stronger backs -- so they were given the task of digging the trench to bring the wiring from the trailer to the permanent power pole. It was quite a lengthy distance but they started in and followed the line Rob had painted on the ground and worked their way through buried bricks and a sidewalk that was in the way! Oh the power of youth!

In the beginning . . .

Digging down 24 inches for a distance of approximately 130 feet takes strength. Doing it without getting paid takes a servant heart! There were alot of those helping today!

That roll of wire isn't lightweight or easy to handle. Keith and Rob got it all unrolled and then ran through the conduit and then into the ground! Quite the process -- quite the love of Jesus being planted -- literally!

This is why I needed a full size truck bed! That sheetrock is 12 feet long and packs some pretty heavy weight when stacked! No problem for Big Red!

Getting it unloaded is another job! They are packed with 2 sheets together. We pulled the tape off that holds them together and even then it's tough work! Once again the youth and their strong backs were put to the test -- and they passed with flying colors!

I have always been one to "preach" that women are very able to do construction! Sus took that message to heart and learned to use both a staple gun and a slap staple gun today! The real evidence of a servant heart? She just had back surgery a couple of months ago! This woman is such a dear friend to me and a source of strength that is indescribable!! A priceless treasure, a true gift to me from God! Thank you Lord and thank you Sus!

No, it's not a ground hog or a mole or even a wild boar that's been rutting through the mud! It's Sus's husband, Schel. He spent his entire time underneath the trailer wrapping up the final details on the heating and air system he installed a couple of weeks ago and then took it a step further and finished up the vapor barrier underneath! Now it's been very rainy here the past few days so he knew to wear his yellow "duck suit" but after today -- that duck suit was going to have to be sent to the trash! What a trooper! He may be a quiet man -- but he's a mighty man of God!

It's been a great work day! I know God was smiling and most likely laughing out loud with the rest of us who were "working." Somehow the word "work" just isn't fitting when a group of volunteers get together to bless someone!!!

An update on Monroe, who is trying to organize his Amish team to come here and rebuild Don's home. One of their warehouses caught fire and has major damage so Monroe is headed to see how bad things are. Please hold them all up in prayers. And some extra prayers for his brother who is hospitalized with a severe and life threatening infection in his leg! More details will follow as they get to me!

Looking both ways

Updates:

Monroe called me yesterday and he is rallying the Amish troops. He hopes to bring them next weekend, Friday and Saturday. He will be calling me to come and pick him up (Amish don't drive) one day early next week to come back and take a very detailed look at Don's and put together his final plan of action so I can have materials on the ground and ready to go -- the right materials! A couple of options are in the making to have Don be able to stay out of the house to enable the volunteers to work freely and at a pace they are used to.

Michael's work day is again tomorrow and I know we'll be running wiring to the main power pole and hopefully tying up the last of the electrical to be ready to sheetrock the ceilings. The ceiling insulation only needs a couple more spots checked and it's ready. I know Michael is more than ready and join me in prayers for volunteers to come out and enjoy the sunny day!

Today I am headed to help my mother cater a dinner for the VIPs of the Methodist church. She never ceases to amaze me at how she can nearly single handedly pull together these big dinners! She asked me months ago to help so off I go. Should be so much fun!!

Monty is doing well with the stitches out. His finger did "drop" a large piece of dead area last night but hopefully the rest will continue to heal. It's tough when so much of his work requires his hands to be wet. Between working in water and working with wood -- both cause extreme dryness of the skin so he will do the best he can to keep healing ointment on them -- pray for him!!! Guys and ointment just don't seem to go together!! :)

So . . . by looking both ways -- and in all directions things are coming together and moving forward. In all we do we pray for God to be glorified and His people blessed through our help!

I'm not ready for this . . .

Yesterday we were back to Tuesday morning Bible study. I really missed it since I had to leave to meet Monroe the last time we met and last week we didn't meet due to the holiday. Each week I come away feeling refilled and refueled and I really needed it yesterday.

But of course, just let satan get wind of that refilling and he isn't happy and tries to hit me doublely hard! I felt as though I were in a battle all day long.

When I left Bible study it was raining and within minutes it changed over to snow -- a heavy snow -- one that made that 40 minute trip quite trecherous! The closer I got to home the harder it snowed and thankfully it didn't last all day. The tree in the picture below is in my front yard and no --- I am not ready for this kind of weather!!!!

Monty was also less than thrilled with this surprise weather. He had been working outside all day, sewer and water lines, and was soaked when he got home. Trying to keep his stitched finger dry was an impossibility and even though he had coveralls on -- the zippers are broken and he was still cold and wet! Thanks to our neighbor Shelley's more than generous heart I was able to go to Walmart today and get him a new pair with the label that says "water proof." He'll be the one to put that to the test! Bless you, Shelley, for seeing a need and blessing him! You're the best!

Today the sun is shining and that snow is trying to melt. Tonight Monty will get the stitches removed and we are still praying that the rebuilding of that finger will hold. It's turned all sorts of colors and I'm just not sure yet and anxious to hear what the doctors think.

I got a great surprise email too! Seems Jack, from New Jersey, who brought Louis and spent a week rebuilding the subfloors on Michael's trailer -- has been keeping up with the blog and has a skilled friend who wants to come and install the kitchen cabinets for us when we are ready!!!! This is such an amazing blessing because this entire kitchen is custom designed for Michael and his wheel chair. We know God always brings just who we need right when we need them and knowing this ahead of time allows us to breathe a sigh of thanksgiving and praise! Not to mention how awesome it will be to see Jack again!

I am still waiting to hear from Monroe (with the Amish) about their upcoming trip here to rebuild Don's home. I talked with him Monday morning and he was headed to Joplin, MO to see how his crew is doing in the rebuilding of a tornado damaged home there. He will let me know as soon as he knows.

Also -- I got word today that we will have the ability (financially) to either put Don up in a hotel room or possible bring in a camper trailer and place it in his yard while the rebuilding is taking place! The local county treasurer will make certain he has one or the other so a great big thanks to them for stepping an and helping out by going above and beyond!

Things are all moving forward and I'm doing my best to keep up. I thank all of you for your prayers. Times have been rather difficult for us lately -- financially -- and it looks like it's going to be necessary for me to find a job after the first of the year! "Ends" just aren't meeting even with Monty working almost 6 days a week! Please hold me up in special prayer about this decision. It's not an easy one and with jobs as scarce as they are . . . I need your prayers! In many ways!!!!

Thanks John

Every Saturday is a work day at Michael's and even though this was a holiday weekend one faithful volunteer came out to help -- John.

John has been involved quite a few Saturdays and usually Monty picks him up and gives him a ride. With Monty's finger still healing he decided it was best for him to not go and take the chance of further injury. That was fine with John - he drove himself and was such a big help to Michael - especially since he was the only volunteer!

The first task at hand was to put plastic over the new back windows. They still need the trim pieces at the top (you can see the area above the window) and that is where water wants to come in. With rain in the forecast it was necessary to do a make-shift fix for the time being. With the exterior of this trailer being metal - duct tape will not stick. But we got busy tossing ideas around and came up with a solution that was indeed put to the test last night and will be for the next few days according to the weather man. Let's pray it works.

Next came the task of continuing the ceiling insulation. You can see by the picture that quite alot has already been done and that Michael will be both toasty warm in the winter and nice and cool in the summer. Insulation is not something "joyful" to work in - but John finds joy in everything he does and came dressed for the job - long sleeves.

Michael is always right there lending a helping hand and most of the time trying to get the job done himself but let's face it -- doing ceiling insulation from a wheelchair? And yet he had already found a way!

It's not completely done but with a few more volunteers and a few more hours we can call it buttoned up and ready for ceiling sheetrock! That is a day Michael (and all of us) have really been looking forward to!

Michael also put a request out over the internet for the wire we will need to connect to the permanent power pole outside for the final electrical work. The wire normally retails for nearly $4.00 per foot. He received an answer from someone who has a brand new roll, more than enough for what we need, and is selling it for $1.00 per foot! Thank you Lord - for that miraculous answer to prayers!

In my morning Bible studies the other day I read this: "The basic motivation of life is that we please God more than people and thus serve people through God's love."

Each time someone volunteers to help Michael (or anyone else in need) they love God more than people and show that love by serving those people in need.

Think about that and take a quick look around you -- I guarantee you can show God's love in ways you never imagined. We just need to take our blinders off and really look . . .

Sharpshooter --- thankfully!

While babysitting for my grandchildren on Sunday afternoon I saw a wonderful magazine filled with recipes on my daughter's table. Since she only wanted one of them she gave me the whole book! I had my eye on a special cake that looked like something great to make to take to my parent's house for Thanksgiving dinner. Remember --- my mother is the queen of pie baking so I don't go there -- but I could be safe with a cake! This picture is the before -- all three layers ready to go into the oven.

Ta - Da! The final product. It actually looked like the picture in the magazine and let me tell you -- it was delicious!!!! It was a carrot cake with coconut and oranges in the batter with a creme center that was cream cheese and orange marmalade with chocolate ganache on the top!!! Alot of work but more that worth it!

It was a great Thanksgiving day. My brother from Florida made it home and we were all surprised that his daughter, my niece, also made the trip from Florida! Seems my other niece and my daughter both knew she was coming but proved that they are very able to keep a secret! It was great to see both of them and I only wish we had more time together.

Today we were invited to a different kind of Black Friday -- one where we could do more shooting and try and qualify for our Rifleman badge. I love going out and target shooting! I never dreamed I would but it's the one and only thing in my entire life that I have found I can do and completely block out everything else going on in my head! For those of you who know me well -- or read this blog at all -- you know I am a "wordy" person and all those words are always banging around in my brain, rain or shine, asleep or awake! But shooting is the one thing I have discovered that takes all my focus and attention and nothing else at all is in my mind! It's so great! So today we headed back out to shoot more AQTs (Army Qualification Tests) and see how we could do.

These are the targets. We are placed 82 feet from the target. The first bell shape is 4 inches in height and we must shoot 10 shots from the standing position and have 2 minutes to do so.
The next 2 targets are 3 inches tall and we must shoot 5 shots in each. We get ourselves set up while sitting, then we must stand and wait for the command and then sit back down in our positions and load and shoot. We have 50 seconds to complete all the shots. We have to load 2 bullets in one cartridge and 8 in another so it means we have to also change cartridges in that 50 seconds.
The 3rd line is shot from the prone (lying down) position. We once again get set in the prone position, stand and wait for the command, then get into the prone position and shoot 3 shots in the first and middle target and 4 shots in the far right target. We have 60 seconds to do that. This one also requires that we have a cartridge with 2 bullets and another with 8 - changing cartridges once again.
The bottom line targets are only 1 inch high and are all done from the prone position also. This time we start and stay in that position. We also have 5 minutes to shoot 2 shots in the first 2 targets and 3 shots into the next 2. We get to use one cartridge with 10 bullets so there is no changing them out while shooting. Each score in this line counts for double points.
My results?

On my first sheet I didn't even score enough to qualify. The second one I made Marksman. The third I made Sharpshooter and on my fourth (and final) one I scored 189, which is still Sharpshooter and only 21 points from making Rifleman!!!! I am happy! I am very happy!!!!

Monty got the change to do some skeet shooting after targets (he didn't do targets with his injured finger but wanted to try the skeets. He won one round and in doing so hurt his finger so he stepped out (that was his 4th round) and it was time to head home. He really enjoyed doing this and hopes to be able to do more of it once he's healed.

Yesterday was a great Thanksgiving day and today was a great day after. We hope you had an enjoyable holiday and didn't get too carried away with the shopping!

Tomorrow we return for another work day at Michael's. I will be calling him immediately after this blog and checking in to see how much more ceiling insulation needs to be installed. We are edging closer and closer to hanging sheetrock -- which means we will be closing it in and moving towards it really looking like a home! We might be creeping along at a snail's pace but we are moving forward!!!!

Blessed Thanksgiving to all

Today my house smells like bacon from breakfast this morning and now chocolate chip oatmeal cookies! It's that time of year! I love it!

This past Sunday Pastor Dave had a great message on thankfulness and if I had to name what I am most thankful for this year it would be --- we are home for another Thanksgiving!!!!

Today my brother arrives from Florida! My other two brothers live near my parents already. We are only an hour away.

My son is about an hour away and my two daughters are right here in town. That means my grandchildren are also right here in town.

All of those are priceless blessings and we appreciate them even more than we did 6 years ago. We know what it's like to NOT be with them during holidays and to be able to enjoy being with them for the second year in a row --- thank you Lord!

It is our prayer that you take a minute (or longer) and really think about ALL the things we have to be thankful for.

My 6 year old grandson's kindergarten teacher asked them to tell what they are thankful for. His response? "Hot girls!" :) You just have to laugh -- and pray for his parents -- he's only 6?????

We are thankful for all of you who continue to support us, to pray for us, to bless us, to love us and to understand the call God has placed on our lives!

Our Thanksgiving wish is for God to return the blessings to you a hundred fold!!!!!!

Heating and Air . . . INSTALLED!!

My apologies for not having pictures of today's progress at Michael's. I just could not get there today.

But . . . Michael informed me that his brand new heating and air unit are installed!! He has no idea just how warm and cool his new home will be! In his current living conditions he must heat with wood. This means he has to wheel himself outside to get the wood, then get it stacked on his front porch area, then roll from inside the house to the porch, load the wood on his lap, manuever back inside and load the woodstove! And then when he and I were talking the other day he was telling me how the wind blows through around the windows so much that the curtains are swaying back and forth! So this heating and air unit is a blessing he's yet to fully experience!

Many, many thanks to Schel for making this possible -- and for doing the installation!

Michael also told me he had some helpers today! Praise God! They worked very hard to get the ceiling insulation put up to prepare for the ceiling sheetrock to begin. If you read a couple of days ago Michael was doing this alone -- using a broom -- because there was no one to help him! Volunteers are far more priceless than they can imagine!

Since Monty had to stop the installation of the door yesterday and make a mad dash to the ER for his finger -- he had to finish it today. He doesn't get paid until the job is done so . . . I went with him to try and help. We did get it done and he also found out that even though it's just one finger, it affects your entire body! The pain was tremendous by the time we got home. He will be taking all of next week off to allow this injury to graft itself back to his hand and heal properly. After working today, he didn't argue with me!!!

With this next week being Thanksgiving week he won't miss that much work. And he needs to catch up with some rest anyway.

The Fabulous Frat Boys to the Rescue

27 fraternity brothers looking for a service project. That's the phone call I got earlier this week and today was the day they got their service project.

We met at Sam's Club parking lot so we could have a mini orientation and do as much carpooling as possible. None of the guys had ever done anything like this so we talked alot about respect for the homeowners and the situations they find themselves in. We talked about safety and listening to what the homeowner (and me) direct them in doing.

They were all dressed for the weather, rather cool yet sunny, and before long one of their vehicles had sweatshirts piled on the hood as they learned that working causes one to work up a sweat, especially when one works as hard as they were.

Some of them worked on removing the damaged portions of Don's back deck. With a little bracing here and there it will be as sturdy as it was before the tornado.

Others started working on some of the hanging tree limbs -- there are soooo many on his property and we need heavy equipment to remove about 5 very large trees before starting any rebuilding. The guys did a great job in removing the ones they could.

A whole bunch of the guys headed inside. These tackled the removal of flooring, ceiling insulation remnants and firring strips and then learned how to demo walls. They learned quickly to shovel the trash out the window and the guys outside took wheelbarrow loads to the dumpster. Teamwork!

Just how many frat brothers can you pack into one room? Alot!

The outside team, wheelbarrow loaded and using brute force by carrying it overhead! Who needs a gym? These workouts are free.

Removing the ceilings from the second bedroom, insulation falling from overhead causes one to pull up the hoodie on your sweatshirt.

Four of the guys went to Billy's house to remove the foam tiles that used to be on his ceiling. Everything else has been done except putting in this new dining room ceiling and residing one end of his house. This work was tedious work since each and every staple had to be removed, by hand, and before doing anything they had to remove the dining room furniture.

He's just having way too much fun!!!!

The end result? A 30 yard dumpster overflowing -- and they didn't even get to the garage! What a great job guys!!!! Wish we would've known about you all months ago when all the debris was everywhere!!

And then . . . very late in the work day . . . my phone rang. All I heard Monty say was that he had cut his finger and was on the way to the emergency room. He had been installing entry doors at 2 homes and even though he had just called me about an hour ago -- this was one of "those" phone calls that you know isn't good.
I had to bid a very quick farewell and thank you to the frat boys and headed to the hospital. They had just got him in the room and oh my -- the blood was everywhere! Ever since his heart attack in 2004 he takes a baby aspirin daily and today we learned they are working -- the blood flowed so much that even trying to get him cleaned up proved to be next to impossible!
We did get into a room where we discovered that he nearly cut the end of his finger off. He had been using a box cutter style knife and had just put in a new blade! While cutting the shims off the door frame -- in a split second -- the knife slipped and bam!!!!
They xrayed to make sure the bone was okay and it was. But they had to rebuild the end of his finger before they could stitch it up. It took over 45 minutes to put in 7 stitches and he was "done" with this day -- in a big way! We will need to watch it very closely over the next few days to make sure the rebuilding "takes" and everything heals as it should. The stitches have to stay in atleast 10 days! And he needs to go back and finish the door installation tomorrow! Guess who will be going to help!!!! And no box cutter style knives will be allowed!

Please pray for miraculous healing and that the pain will subside alot during the night!

Tomorrow is the weekly work day at Michael's where the heating and air conditioning system will be going in and the ceiling insulation will hopefully be completed. And guess what -- no box cutter knives will be allowed!!!

All Systems GO!!!

Yep -- the decision has been made!

We are going to rebuild Don's house!!!!

The morning had me sitting behind the contractor's desk at Lowes with 2 men who were trying their bes to get estimates done for me. One was all the materials for the house, the other for the garage. Of course, one can never get every single piece of material but we got as close as possible. The house estimate was pretty complete but the one for the garage didn't have anything for the reworking of the foundation, running the water and sewer lines and reworking the back added on room. Even without all that -- the estimate for the house was substantially lower. That was the first good news.

The second? When the Monroe County Building Commissioner paid a visit to Don's. He hadn't seen it and agreed that he not only wanted to, he needed to. The smile on his face as he got out of his truck spoke volumes to me. We once again walked all around the house, checking the foundation, checking the roof and everything else. When we went inside he was as surprised as I was -- nearly all the damage is confined to the roof. Yes, it looks horrendous and if you've never worked on disaster damaged homes it might be overwhelming. But the commissioner looked at nearly every detail and agreed with the plans we had in our mind. He isn't able to "recommend" we rebuild the house or turn the garage into a house but he can tell us his thoughts.

I liked his thoughts. He liked what he saw. He also agreed to work with us in obtaining the building permit and anything else we might need along the way.

We were all smiles as he pulled out of the driveway.

Next was to make the phone call to Jane of Catholic Charities. She's been covered up since Tuesday morning with the tornado that struck Paoli and was once again on the road there. She was happy with the input from the commissioner and we agreed that we will rebuild the house.

Next phone call? To Monroe, the Amish team leader. I was happy to give him the green light to organize his team and let me know when they would be here and if they would need housing. If he gets the team from Rockville, Illinois they will most likely drive back and forth since it's only an hour away. If they come from any farther they will need housing. I assured him we have a church lined up that will be happy to house them. I also let him know that he and his wife are more than welcome to stay here with us. Time will tell.

So tomorrow we welcome a very large group of volunteers, mostly students, from here at Indiana University. They will have their work cut out for them. We will be removing all damaged materials and furniture from Don's house, cleaning up the yard area, finishing the gut out of the damaged rooms and doing our best to have everything ready for the rebuilding to start. It's a big job but there may be upwards of 35 volunteers so alot will be happening all over the place and it will all be good and working forward! Go team!

Upon arriving home I got a phone call from Michael -- who was in his trailer working all by himself -- putting up ceiling insulation!!!! I had to ask him how in the world he was doing that? Remember that he's in a wheelchair!!! He laughed when he told me he was using a broom to hold it up and get it to stay behind the trusses. He later sent me a picture of the progress he'd made and I was amazed! The old saying "necessity is the mother of invention" definitely applies here! The sad part -- that he was doing this alone! Where are the volunteers to help him? Why does he have to wait till Saturdays to get any help -- and even then they just aren't showing up! It is a little more than frustrating for me -- but ten times as much for Michael. By working only one day a week we feel as though we are moving at a snail's pace -- a crippled snail at that! We have put out request after request but so far they just aren't showing up. Any ideas????

So at the end of the day -- a good day -- a day of moving forward in a big way with Don -- a day of Michael moving forward on his own -- I thank God for His direction -- for His provision and for His constant love for all of us!

The ceiling in Don's family room -- complete with a hole that not only allows the sun to shine it -- so does the wind and rain and cold weather, bringing down more insulation and ceiling each time. What a mess!

I think the $64,000 question at this point is: is the house structurally sound enough to invest in rebuilding or do we remodel the detached 2 car garage into a house?

Seems each contractor that comes to take a look has a different opinion.

Today I had an appointment scheduled with the building commissioner to see if some of my questions and concerns could be resolved. Monroe was sitting with his material list to rebuild the house and he needed to know whether to continue with it or not. Don has applied for his grant from the state and with the weather getting colder each day we have no time to waste.

The commissioner was a big help as we discussed each option and difficulty and then had to toss in the fact of lack of funding. It was rather like playing ping pong, back and forth and back and forth.

At the end of our meeting I asked the commissioner if he would come and take a look at the house and garage. He said he hadn't seen them himself and although he cannot make the final decision due to liability issues, he can take a look and . . .

So tomorrow we will meet at Don's and once again get another opinion.

Monroe got his material listing to me so first thing in the morning I will head to both Lowes and Menards to speak with the folks at the contractors desk where they can take the materials and put dollars to them. Atleast then I will have a better idea of what the rebuilding of the house would cost.

Of course, there are always "hidden" things that can pop up when you start opening up walls and ceilings and floors so you can never get an exact estimate. But we can get a rough idea and at the same time compare the costs between the stores. Bottom dollar always wins!

Please keep Don in your prayers as this has been a very difficult time for him and although his spirits are high and he is being as flexible as anyone could be under these circumstances, we need to get started and get this gentleman back into a real home!

Also please pray for direction -- for us all to have divine wisdom in making this decision. Our goal is to bring Don home again and in doing so -- bring glory and honor and thanksgiving to our awesome God who continually tells us that with Him nothing is impossible!

And while you are praying, please remember the 25 families in the city of Paoli (about an hour south of us) that were struck by a tornado on Monday night!

Which way do we go?

For days and days on end we have been trying to decide whether or not Don's home can be rebuilt. It was hit by the tornado back in late May and as you can see -- the tarps are long gone along with the entire back of the home. The alternative plan has been to turn his detached 2 car garage into a home.

Some have said it cannot be rebuilt, a few in fact. Yesterday I brought in our local expert -- Rob. He took a good look around, climbed on top, looked below and said he thought it could be rebuilt. He gave his suggestions and his opinions and I forwarded those on to Jane at Catholic Charities. She has been handling all these cases and is turning over the ones still needing work to us. She and I spent a few more hours talking about which direction do we go?

Late afternoon had both she and I at the local long term recovery meeting, or a form of such. Every state has an organization called VOAD -- Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster. They literally wrote the manual for disaster response and relief. A new organization is springing up all over called COAD; Community Organizations Active in Disaster. There has been a local COAD here in Monroe County since January of this year . . . but they have no experience in disasters. They met yesterday and invited Jane and I to come and shed some light on things since we both have over 6 years of "boots on the ground" experience. It was a good meeting, alot was said and alot was learned and hopefully I will be getting some volunteer connections from those in attendance.

This morning I headed out for my weekly Bible study and had no more than landed in my seat when my phone rang. Normally I would not answer but I had made a call to Monroe, our expert Amish contractor and volunteer team leader who led teams for us in Texas for over 2 months. He lives in Illinois near the Indiana border and is actually working on a project about an hour from here. I asked him to come and give us his opinion on Don's home. He was able to arrive earlier than he had anticipated so I left Bible study and headed back home. He arrived about noon and after a quick bite we were off to Don's where we spent hours looking at every single area of the house. It was also his opinion that the house could be rebuilt and he was headed home to finish up the materials list and start gathering his volunteers.

After meeting with Monroe I had yet another meeting with a local pastor to see about housing prospective volunteers at their church and to try and raise funding and volunteers for both this project and Michael's. It was a good meeting and he was able to give me some good connections to follow up with.

Before I could even get home Jane had called me saying that yet another contractor (I think this was the 5th or 6th one) had visited Don's this afternoon and it was his opinion that the home cannot be rebuilt. He had a list of 3 main reasons why not and so the final decision was to not rebuild the home and to turn the garage into a home.

I had to get ahold of Monroe and stop his plans for the house and ask about building the garage into a home. He and I once again spent alot of time discussing this and that. He will still see about gathering his team but with a different direction in mind. He will be waiting for me to get final information from the building department commissioner tomorrow afternoon.

I was also able to schedule a volunteer team of students coming from here at IU for a work day this Friday. They will be going to Don's to do major cleanup work. The leader tells me there could be 35 to 45 people so we should really be able to make a difference there. They will also be traveling down the road to remove the damaged ceiling in Billy's home to prepare for a new ceiling to be installed. I'm excited for these volunteers and know both Don and Billy will be blessed by their help.

By the time all the phone calls were made and notes were written and emails with details printed out it was past dinner time! Monty came dragging in soaking wet as he had been working on water pumps all day which required him to keep his arms in armpit high water -- and it was cloudy and rather cool today so this wasn't a fun job! A quick bite and it's blog time.

I want to thank both Rob and Monroe for taking the time from their busy schedules and come to share their expertise in this difficult decision. I value their thoughts, their experience and their hearts of service so very much. For Monroe to make the trip was such a blessing to all of us. I haven't seen him since Texas and have missed him and his teams of workers. Don has also been so appreciative of all those who have taken time to try and help him get back home -- wherever that might be!

It just goes to show that there are people out there who care, who will go the extra mile for someone else -- for a complete stranger -- because they have the gift of a servant heart and know that when the Bible says to "love your neighbor" it doesn't just mean the folks next door!

God once again filled my heart with joy today. The joy of seeing Monroe. The joy of having Rob as our friend, our brother. The joy of having a pastor of another church understand what we do and to try and help us out. The joy of having another pastor care enough to pray over me even when I couldn't stay for Bible study. The joy of seeing the smile on Don's face -- just because he felt cared for. The joy of knowing that not only did God place this calling on my life -- He has and always will give me what I need to fulfill that calling!

Yes, I am very tired in the physical sense. In my heart and soul I am revived!

What an awesome God I serve!!!

One Man . . .

This day started off in a way I have been dreading -- our neighbors moved away! For 16 years they have lived across the street from us -- I don't know life without them being there! When I first bought our house I was newly divorced with 3 children and not a clue about what to do to survive. We had lived in an apartment for a few months and I did not want to stay there. My children had always lived in a house and when I went looking on a Sunday afternoon I found this one. It was in my price range and the neighborhood seemed perfect.

The first time I met Tony and Evie I knew they were special. My front deck was rather nasty as you could see underneath and I shared with them that one of my first projects was going to be to add boards to make sides. When I got home the next day -- the project was done. All I needed to do was to paint them! I was shocked and thrilled and from day one we have been the best of friends.

Today they brought in the rental truck and along with their 3 kids and 3 kids in law they packed up and headed to their new home in Greenwood. They want to be closer to their grandchildren and although we know it's the best thing for them --- I am being totally selfish in saying I cried and cried this morning in trying to wish them well and "see you later."

Lord, please bless them and keep them --- for us!

After bidding them farewell Monty was off to try and accomplish 3 jobs in 1 day. This time he took John as a helper and they did get one of them complete. The other 2 will come next week. The main one was to seal the roof of a mobile home and they had to wait for the temps to reach high enough to get it done. The sun was bright and the winds blowing so the job got done and John learned that coating a roof is sort of like painting with glue!

I headed south to Michael's. Saturdays are always work days and today the new entry doors were on Rob's truck and ready to be installed --- thanks to the Vineyard church!!!! How awesome!!! I made a stop at Lowes to pick up ceiling insulation and because of a special sale I was able to purchase a much higher grade than we expected. The salesmen laughed when I told them I could get all 32 rolls in the back of my truck -- until they saw me pack them in! They had no idea they were dealing with the queen of packing a truck bed! I even got a couple of 2 x 6's in there!

When I arrived at Michael's there was only one volunteer there for work day! Rob -- one man!! But oh that man! Rob is a dear friend of ours who came to Texas to work with us and really has a heart for this kind of work. He is a contractor and I really believe he can build anything! He works at a constant speed -- non stop. He doesn't get rattled, he doesn't get angry, he doesn't get frustrated, he just works and smiles and shares life with Michael --- basically a perfect example of Jesus' love! He had the front door installed -- one wide enough for Michael to move in and out of with ease and when he pulled out the gold colored door handle and bolt lock --- his smile shown like gold! He loved the idea of a handle instead of a door knob and was so excited when it was all put together! You can see below. Look closely at the one picture and see his smile through the door window!

One person CAN make a BIG difference --- and most people just don't realize that! They think and feel like they can't do anything, they don't know how, they are just one and that's not enough -- all sorts of thoughts that are nothing but lies from satan! Rob shows that one person, just one - who has the heart to serve, who knows that our mission field is sometimes right outside our own back door, who works all week long and yet comes out on Saturdays to help and serve and be the hands and feet of Jesus!

This world would be such an amazing place if more people were half that dedicated and committed to God!

Rob -- we thank you and we love you!

Leaves . . . and more leaves . . .

Today was one of those days that I can get lost in. Early this morning I headed outside to try and do something with the "depth" of leaves that had accumulated in our yard. With an extremely large pin oak tree and an equally large maple tree the leaves were amazing.

A very dear friend of mine knows how much I enjoy working outside so he gave me an electric blower. I have learned to love that thing. I got ahold of it and started in our yard. It took quite a long time but it now looks really good -- atleast you can see the grass now.

From there I headed across the street to our neighbor lady and she had even more in her yard than we did. She backs up to the woods and so . . . She now also looks good.

And then there was one more neighbor and it also looks alot better.

In between I was answering phone calls and talking with our Amish buddy, Monroe, about Don's house - the one hit by the tornado and the one I showed you pics of a few days ago. Monroe and his team worked with us over 2 months in Texas and I know what kind of miraculous work they are capable of. The exact kind of work we need with Don. Monroe is checking his schedule and will hopefully make it over here early next week -- before I have my meeting with the building commissioner.

Our dear friend Rob, who has been the lead carpenter on Michael's, is also going to take a look at Don's sometime on Monday and give me his opinion. He not only is a fabulous carpenter, he has a heart for this kind of work and I trust his ideas and thoughts more than anyone else.

It is my hope that after these two gentlemen look at Don's we can come to a decision as to what direction we will head.

I am also excited as the article in our local newspaper asking for volunteers has spurred some emails and a couple of them are interested in helping at Michael's on Saturdays until we have a direction for them here. One is a carpenter and I hope to get him into another home next week, depending on his schedule.

Last night we were blessed to be able to attend the Campus Life banquet and someone asked me a question sort of caught me off guard but is typical of my life here at home. They asked what we have been doing and when we told them about Michael's project and Monty working full time and on his own during and sometimes 7 days a week -- they looked at me and asked, "what do you do all week?" My first thought -- they obviously don't read the blog -- and my second thought was "sometimes it's tiring trying to explain to someone what I actually do!" I truly do think I am an alien here on earth! :)

So tomorrow I return to Michael's and see how many volunteers show up. I know Rob will be there as he has the new exterior doors and will be doing the reframing job to install them both. And Schel will be there as he's bringing the new heating and air system. I will be stopping to purchase all the ceiling insulation early in the morning and hopefully we have plenty of help to get all the projects completed! The weather is supposed to be sunshine and in the low 60s so --- perfect!

Pie Baking 101

I was the one who needed a break -- a day away from anything that was anything -- and yesterday was that day.

Cheryl and family -- you've seen their pics from the entertainment at the festival a couple of weeks ago and from their visits at our home and theirs -- are wonderful when it comes to cooking! Both Emily and Haley have a real talent and when they saw the pies my mother made to auction off at the festival they decided they needed a class in pie baking.

Yesterday was that day! They set it up with my mother and of course, I had to be there --- not to participate -- just to watch and enjoy the fun! And fun it was!

Learning the "art" of the pie crust. It was just like they do on TV. They made one -- and it has to chill in the refrigerator for awhile but Mom already had a chilled one ready to go so no waiting!
Making those special designs around the edge had Haley's undivided attention!

Next came the real art of meringue. You have to understand that seeing one of my mother's pies always brings about shock and awe to the viewer -- especially the first time! Her meringue usually stands a good 3 plus inches on top of the pie! So getting it just right is something special and you can see from the pic below that the girls are truly concentrating!

And the final results? Graduation with an A+ !!!! They had 2 chocolate cream pies and an apple crumb topped one! And enough "secret" ingredients to have more fun at home!

It was a great day spent with family and friends. Much thanks to my aunt for lunch -- we need to spend more lunches like that! And to Cheryl, Emily, Haley and Mom -- thanks for a day that was filled with laughter and love!

Today --- a home visit to tornado damage, calls to possible volunteers and a boat load of thanks and praise to God for all His goodness.

Better put your shoes on . . .

If you have sensitive toes or get offended easily you just might want to put your shoes on before reading any further -- or just not continue reading -- the choice is yours. But I warn you . . . I am on my soapbox and ready to "vent" somewhat?

My entire afternoon has been spent seeing the results of what happens when a community is not prepared for a disaster and then due to not being prepared or educated or experienced -- people don't "slip" through the cracks of the system -- the system drops them on their already injured heads and does nothing!

I would like to introduce you to Don --- this is how he is currently living -- these were taken today!

Shocking? Yes, to say the least.   The real shocker --- the tornados that hit Don's house struck here on May 25th of this year! Why do I remember so well? That was the night of my birthday AND this home is less than 2 miles from ours!

And Don IS living in this home just as it is! Why? Because he has nowhere else to go. He was working at the time of the tornado but has since lost that job and is unemployed. He has no money because he survives on unemployment. He has no place else to go -- no place!

He "crashed" through the cracks of the system because the system let him crash!

FEMA did not respond to these tornados. And before you go and get all upset and start blaming the government -- stop -- they did not respond because the proper information was not relayed to them! The failure was in the local system. They did not know how to respond due to lack of education and therefore the results speak for themselves. FEMA does not respond unless they are called and given enough information to come in and set up shop. If they don't get the information . . . you do the math!

So now we are 6 months later and we have been asked to come along side and take over the case -- along with more than are not finished!

I received a call from Catholic Charities a couple of weeks ago -- I had originally called them here locally to ask if any funding for Michael's rebuild might be available. I was told that there are no funds for anything non disaster related. And then only a few days later I received a call from Jane who's based out of Indianapolis but is responsible for any and all disasters from there to the Kentucky border. She has been trying to bring in volunteers to help those folks hurt by the tornados.  She has been struggling and struggling and heard about us and what we have dedicated our lives to doing and called asking for help.  The "you are an answer to prayer" was sincere as finding anyone who has experience is nearly impossible! We set an appointment to meet today and she took me to Don -- the priority homeowner.

My heart sank as we pulled into his driveway! This is right outside our back door -- in the middle of a stretch where the tornados went through -- the stretch that was so blocked up with traffic of folks driving by and ooohhing and aaahhing at the damage -- everyone knows where it is!

So why is he still not getting help? Why, after 6 months has absolutely nothing been done? No volunteers and no funds! Sound familiar? Sure does to me!

Because FEMA wasn't given the proper information and did not come in that also means that SBA, Small Business Administration didn't come in right away either. They are known for sort of "riding the back seat" with FEMA and offer extremely low interest rates to those who need loans.  When SBA did get here Don was quick to apply.  He was turned down -- because he is unemployed and so has no way to repay a loan, no matter how low the interest rate is! Strike two!

So now we have yet more paper work to complete. The state of Indiana has funding available -- a maximum of $5,000 to rebuild! Now once again take a good look at those pictures and tell me $5,000 is enough?!

No way!!! Especially when the house is not structurally sound and must be torn down! After we get Don out, of course!

So where does he go and what do we do? He has a detached garage that is about 22' by 28' that we hope to transform into a home for him. The first problem? Other than lack of funding and lack of volunteers? The roof of the garage is damaged, the foundation doesn't meet building codes for a dwelling, the foundation isn't insulated, the concrete floors would need jackhammered to allow for plumbing, the electric isn't strong enough for a home . . . how much longer do you need me to go on?

Have our work cut out for us? You bet! Impossible? No way! You see, I happen to believe the scripture that says "with God, nothing is impossible." I've seen His miracles and I believe He is still in the business of performing miracles!

But . . . if the church isn't the building --- it's the people --- where is the church? It's preached from the pulpits all the time, the word "servant" is quite common, the Bible tells us that faith without works is dead . . . yet . . . where is the church at a time like this?

Yes, I know full well that the economy is tough right now (when hasn't it been?) and prices of everything continue to go up and up --- we are missionaries --- remember ---which means we survive on donations and with 83% of missionaries coming off their fields of service due to lack of funding -- we are praying that doesn't happen to us but . . . where is the church?

Helping Don doesn't take scheduling a trip, finding a place to stay, raising money for food, being away from your family for a few nights ---- he is right out our back door!

And if we -- as the church -- have been "commanded" by God to "love your neighbor as yourself" then what kind of love is this!!??

Like I said, I am on my soapbox -- the same one I've been on for 6 years now. God gave me a heart for helping others -- some might say to a fault -- and God also gave me the gift of words and speech! He gives us gifts to use and it took Monty to tell me that I need to use these gifts!

If I don't speak for Don, and the thousands of other people we have helped over the past 6 years -- then I am not fulfilling the calling God has placed on my life.

I take that calling seriously! That calling gives me life and hopefully hope to those in such desperate need to see the love of Jesus for them through someone else! I am not special. I am no different than you or your neighbor. I am just one woman who knows that God has called me to reach out and help others.

Is there a moral to this blog? That is between you and God.

I just felt the need to tell the story in full truth, to show you the pictures -- the reality --and hopefully not step on too many toes in the process.

25 Years!!!!!!! Let's celebrate!!

First of all --- wishing a very happy birthday to the dad -- Terry! I can't imagine what a celebration all 10 kids and Cheryl must have planned for this evening! We love you all and can't wait to see you again!

Psalm 127: 1 says, "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it." The theme of this morning's message at church --- hold that thought as yesterday's progress at Michael's is shown in pictures.

Zac is helping Schel with cleaning all the duct work underneath the trailer in preparation for the installation of the new heating and air system which should be here and ready for install next Saturday.

Cody gets some of the tough work -- scraping the old, dried up glue that held in the old windows. This trailer is a 1989 so that glue has been there for awhile!

Schel and Zac cleaning and repairing and preparing. Schel is a heating and air technician so he's "the man" when it comes to that project!

Zac and John are working on putting the vapor barrier underneath the trailer and as you can see - this end doesn't have much working room underneath so it took some reaching and stretching and dedication!

Michael's new handicapped accessible shower for his bathroom. It's industrial size, 60 inches across and 37 inches deep! The grab bars are molded into the walls along with the soap dish and the faucet is a hand held with the mounting located just above the water turn on -- within reach of someone sitting down! And this was donated!!!! Isn't God awesome!

Next Satuday will be new door installation, both front and back, thanks to our Vineyard church and their most blessed donation! We will also be starting the install of the heating and air unit and insulating the ceilings before hanging the sheetrock up there. The more the insulation the better for both winter and summer -- and Michael! So if you have some spare time next Saturday make sure and come on out and enjoy the fellowship that goes along with the work!

Which now brings me to the scripture at the beginning of this blog.

This morning we celebrated our own Pastor Dave and Lisa being here and pastoring Vineyard church for 25 years!!! (And they aren't as old as me!)

It was an incredible morning. We joined service with another local church here, another Pastor Dave at Genesis church. Both Daves are close friends and not only did Genesis open it's doors to all us Vineyard folks and bless and honor Dave and Lisa, they had a huge pitch in luncheon following and we all left overflowing with even more love and respect for this amazing couple who have dedicated their lives to serving God, but also to leading us lost sheep in the direction of heaven! We all look forward to the next 25 years!

Pastor Dave of Genesis gave us a message that -- for me -- had a double meaning. One of those times where I knew it was God speaking to me.

When we think of a house or a home we hope and want it to be atleast 4 things:
1. a place of peace
2. a place of safety and protection
3. a place of correction (maybe not tops on our list -- but necessary)
4. a place of commitment
As Pastor Dave (of Genesis) talked about these points I couldn't help hear God speaking to me about the homes we have rebuilt in the past, Michael's that we are rebuilding right now and all those homes damaged from this springs tornadoes right here in our own city that are being turned over to us to rebuild/repair.

Those 4 things always have been, and always will be, priorities with us. I heard God telling me that this is why we are home here for another winter. This is what He wants us to be doing -- only this time right here -- where local folks can help local folks -- where God can show us the value of a home that is peaceful and safe and how important correction and commitment are in that home. God reaffirmed to me that THIS is what He has called us to do -- for others to see -- for others to experience -- for others to be a blessing -- for others to be blessed -- for others to see His hands at work and His heart for both the homeowners and the workers!

What an awesome God we serve -- the same God that Dave and Lisa have dedicated their lives to for the past 25 years and for the rest of their lives! All of us who are blessed to be a part of Vineyard Community Church -- who call it home -- know that it's a place of peace, safety, protection, correction and commitment --- that's why it's HOME!!!!

To Dave and Lisa -- thank you doesn't begin to express our appreciation, our friendship nor our love. Just know you are priceless to the both of us - and to so many others! It's an honor to know you and a bigger honor to know you are our friends -- our family!!!!

To Pastor Dave of Genesis -- thank you and your congregation for your hospitality, your love and your message this morning! You also keep doing what you are doing and know God will bless you for it!

Narrowing the direction

I took this picture of the red maple tree in our front yard a couple of days ago and it's a good thing as today the rains came and the leaves are falling faster than the rain drops! And I just blew leaves from our landscaping and mowed and mowed 5 more yards yesterday! Today . . . you can't tell I did a thing! But I enjoyed the warm weather yesterday and loved seeing the beauty of God in the ever changing creation all around us!

Today I have spent most all day either on the computer or on the phone. With the fundraising festival raising enough funds to cover the cost of the new windows and heating and air system for Micheal's, this Saturday's work day will be a big one! Rob will be bringing both the new exterior doors (thanks to the generous hearts of Vineyard church) so changes will be happening, ones that are alot more visible and that lead us closer and closer to putting in walls! Thank you Lord!

I also spent some time talking with Jane of Indianapolis's Catholic Charities about the upcoming projects of rebuilding/repairing the 20 plus homes here at home! How exciting this is for us! Doing what God called us to do -- right here at home! She and I will be meeting next week and I will then have files on each homeowner and know a bit more about which direction we are going when.

The plea for volunteers has already been put out there but I will continue to "harp" on it! Today was a boost for me when Monroe called me. Monroe led teams Amish volunteers for 2 months in Texas. We had the pleasure of getting to know him, his heart and his desire to work with us again on a project. He just lives across the state line in Illinois and is also excited about the possibility of coming over here, a short drive, to help those who are now looking at winter weather knocking on their doors --- if they have doors to knock on!

God has blessed us with both Michael's project and now these upcoming ones! The joy has welled up in my heart, my joy runs even deeper and my faith is stronger than ever!

A couple of months ago this question was asked in Bible study, "how do you know what your calling is?" My response was/is, "what is the thing that when you do it -- it brings you life?" THAT is your calling! When you are operating in your calling you are alive, you are energetic, you are powerful, you are joyful, it's visible to the naked eye of others, they want a piece of "it", and even though you may not have the resources, the time and/or the ability --- you know God has called you to "it" and you will let nothing stop you! You will let nothing stand in your way! Your faith will be tested and will stand the test and will come out stronger than before the testing!

Scripture tells us that "with God, nothing is impossible." We all know that verse -- but -- do we really know that verse!!!??? Do we just speak the words in one sentence and then speak all our doubts in the next? Do we stand on that, stand firm, unmovable, unshakable, resolute, determined?

I choose to believe, to stand tough, to let satan know Who is the ultimate boss and then pray my actions do the same!!!

A New Chapter Unfolding . . .

Samuel gave it his all when it came to cleaning up trees and limbs and logs from Michael's back yard on Saturday. And look at that smile --- he knows he's really working for Jesus!!!!

I need to give you an update on a story I haven't even told you yet. Working backwards . . . she came through the double surgery just fine and is on the mend, black eyes and all.

Now moving forward . . . the morning of the festival Sus's mother in law, Evelyn, was helping with serving breakfast to all the workers. It was a really cool morning and inside Michael's trailer was actually colder than it was outside so Evelyn and the ladies decided to come outside and sit in the sun. As Evelyn was coming down the temporary ramp she caught her foot and went crashing to the ground -- face first! The end result was a broken nose and a broken wrist! When we visited her in the hospital Sunday evening she was more than ready for the surgery. They did a double surgery and it only lasted an hour. The damage to both areas was less than they anticipated so she is doing much better and would appreciate your prayers for a speedy recovery!

Yesterday was mowing day for me, 5 down and 5 to go. Weather should be perfect to finish them tomorrow. The leaves are falling faster than they can be mulched. I love this time of year! I've waited all summer to mow and not sweat profusely!

Today was Bible study where I learned even more donations came in for the purchase of the new windows for Michael's trailer! How awesome! Tomorrow I will go and pay for them and schedule the delivery so they can be installed at this Saturday's work day, along with the new entry doors and possibly the heating and air unit! A really big work day on the horizon!!!!!

And this afternoon . . . I had a meeting that has opened a BIG door into IGO Disaster Relief. Seems I am going to be taking over the rebuilding of over 20 homes right here that suffered damage from the tornados that hit here on May 25. I remember the date as that was my birthday and we spent most all of that night in the hospital parking garage and found out that multiple tornados had hit a block behind us!

There were many homes damaged that night and the rebuilding has been more than slow. They are struggling to get a recovery committee put together and even though some funding is available there is no coordination and so nothing is getting done. In some places there is still debris to clean up!

And so . . . God called . . . and here we are. I met with some folks today and will be meeting with the recovery group in a few days. The list of names was turned over to me today. They are trying to see if files have been created with the needed paperwork and if so - get them to me. If not . . . we do what we do and start with step one and schedule a home visit. I was excited to learn that the women I met with are on board to be of help in any way possible!

Monty and I are very excited about this opportunity! We are able to do what God called us to do and do it right here at home! And most of the homes are less than 2 miles from our house!!!!!

As I was talking with the women today I could feel God giving me the direction I had been praying about. I have been asking Him why we are here for another winter and what would He have us do? Today He let me know and as He did I could feel the life stir inside me. This IS what we do and this IS what He called us to do --- and this time I really like the location!

So . . . we are going to need volunteers --- once again! And now you have a choice --- we are coming around the bend with Michael's and before long will be able to see the end approaching. And we will be starting new projects with much work needed so all skills will be needed! Please keep this new calling in your prayers and consider coming to be a blessing! You won't regret it!

I just love how God has all the plans already in place and all He asks us to do is be obedient!

Here we are Lord, use us and send us . . . even if it is just down the road!

Festival Fun!!!!

WORK DAY:

Mary and Zac working on building the fire pit from the sand stone that was dug up out of Michael's back yard over the past weeks.

John worked nearly all day busting apart the old cement steps that were "discovered" from the foundation of an old home that once stood. I think he must have still been shaking in his sleep!

Michael and a group from Vineyard working inside finishing up the plumbing. Yea Vineyard for continually coming to serve!!!!

With the fire pit completed Monty gets a fire started. It really felt good as that sun went down and the winds picked up. We must have spent another hour just sitting around it late in the evening after all the festivities were done!

The jumping monkey was a great hit with the kids! John took full responsibility of it and the rules and the kids and did a wonderful job! I think there were a couple of kids that stayed in it the whole 4 hours!

John and Monty spent some time "down under" finishing up the plumbing!

Unloading the donated golf cart was a bit of a task but the men rose to the challenge. We used the cart to bring food from the fire station across the street to the festival. Since we didn't have enough power the fire station allowed us to use their kitchen. What a blessing!

LET THE FESTIVAL BEGIN!

The Long family gospel singers entertained us all evening. We alternated between the entertainment and auctioning off the donated items! Both were such fun and brought in much needed funds to continue the rebuilding of Michael's home!

In line at the food window. We used the broken window at the end of the trailer to serve from. We had so much food! Pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, coney dogs. all sorts of homemade soups, nachos, chips, pickles and more desserts than I'm able to name! Thanks to Ms Bev and Ms Donna for taking on this job and making it a huge success!

Gina took full responsibility for all the kids games and fun and did a wonderful job! I saw some of the things they made and did and every kid there had a huge smile on their face! Thanks so much Gina!

Larry and Christina from our Vineyard family sure had fun at the auction and were able to bring home some tremendous things to use for themselves and for Christmas gifts!

Many thanks to my mom -- who supports us in all we do. She brought pies for the auction, persimmon pudding for the contest and also had alot of fun at the auction. And little Destiny knew just who to sit by -- Mom bought one of the pink fuzzy papazan chairs for her!!!!

Mary, who is home from Ecuador, took on the responsiblity of all the items up for auction. She had them listed and sorted and arranged for everyone to see ahead of time and then helped sort them for the auction itself! Right now -- time for a bit to eat!!!!

Games tend to bring out the kid in all of us -- as for Monty -- just one of the reasons I love him so!

Corey takes some time to enjoy the fire pit!

Darkness comes much too soon this time of year and by the time all the kids took the stage for the final song it had turned quite a bit colder and alot darker. None the less, they sang their hearts out and had all of us in tears and smiles and our hearts were so warm we didn't feel the cool temperatures! Our deepest thanks to our dearest friends who once again took the time to come and support us, and Michael -- to love on us and everyone there -- and to share the amazing gift God has given them!

On a side note -- this family is not only donating all the trim for the inside of Michael's home -- they are donating all the 2x4's and 2x6's we will need for both of the decks and handicapped ramps!!! Like I said -- what a family!!!!

Way too much fun around the fire after all the festivities are over! All of the kids playing with Monty -- as he says, "my best friends!" And he means it!

It was a great day and a blessed day and a time where we could all see God moving and blessing and providing not only the materials for Michael's home -- but the love and the joy that is priceless!

To everyone who was involved in helping --- my deepest thank you! YOU made a difference! YOU were a blessing and I KNOW God will return those blessings back to you -- and more!

To everyone who came and participated and donated -- my deepest thank you! YOU are changing lives! YOU are following the example of service given to us by Jesus Himself! That joy is unmistakeable and indeed priceless!

To Michael -- "with God, nothing is impossible." God loves you, your church loves you, your family loves you, your neighbors love you --- and yesterday --- some people who were strangers to you -- love you too!

24 Hour Countdown . . .

Yes, the fundraising festival is now only 24 hours away!

The final plans are in motion, the food has been purchased as of this morning (and what fun we had doing so), the stage trailer will be delivered this afternoon, the port a johns are in place and the grassy area has been groomed.

Bring on the people!!!!

The work day will begin with breakfast at 9am for who ever shows up and will continue until 2pm. During that time we will be doing more preparation work outside and some more work on the inside and underneath the trailer.

Also during that time the kids blow up jumping monkey toy will arrive and set up for beginning at 3pm will be underway.

Please keep all of us in your prayers and join us in praying that the Lord will send the people, lots and lots of people, who will not only see His hand at work but feel His love in their hearts!

I don't know if I will home and/or alert enough to post results tomorrow night but if not I will be sure to do so on Sunday.

The festival is coming together . . .

It was a glorious day --- one week ago today! Thanks again Ryan and Dedra!

This is the week! Saturday is the day! Our fundraising festival to raise money for the completion of the rebuilding of Michael's trailer is in the final planning stages and things are going very well.

Today was our weekly Bible study and as usual, very uplifting and meant just for me!

Immediately after we (Mary and I) headed to Sus's house for a bite to eat and some catching up on information before heading off on some important errands.

Sus was really busy last week while we were away and got so many great things accomplished. Mary has jumped in head first and is such a help! We compared notes and made some calls and decided it was coming together quite nicely.

From there we headed to Fayetteville school where we turned in the proper paperwork they required to allow us to use their parking lot. It's nearly across the street from Michael's and is such a blessing. We also stopped into the local Fire Station and were thrilled when they gave us permission to use their kitchen for our food preparation. Since we do not have enough electricity at Michael's (just yet) we will be able to keep all our food at the fire station (right across the street) and then use the donated golf cart to transport it to Michael's where we will be serving. Perfect plan!

We then stopped at Michael's to check out the layout for the festival itself. The grass has already been bushhogged and Michael was mowing over it with his mower. The grass had been tall enough to practically bale into hay but was looking better with each lap Michael made. Our own Vineyard Mike will be doing a final mowing job on Friday. He has all the perfect equipment since he has his own landscaping business. It should look great by Saturday.

Even the weatherman seems to be cooperating as they have sunshine and mid 50 degree temps forecast! Any temp is fine with me -- just no rain please!

One more stop took us to Pastor Jan's to check out his flatbed trailers. He has a perfect one to use for our "stage" and another smaller one that will be used as our "hayride" to and from the parking areas. I also managed to get a few bales of hay donated by a dear friend and will be picking them up on Friday. A few pumpkins to go along with them on the stage and we are all set.

The donations continue to come in for the not so silent auction and it looks as though it's going to be a great one! If folks are smart they will realize this is a super time to get some Christmas gifts purchased! Yesterday I managed to get 2 - 3 month local gym memberships donated along with a couple of fantastic sweatshirts. We also have massages, gift certificates, ceramic figurines, picture frames . . . all sorts of things and they just keep on coming!

This is all so exciting -- seeing God's mighty plan and timing! The joy is spreading throughout the church and community. When we talked with the lady who owns the pizza place just down the street from Michael's she told us that this is a very close community and this is something everyone is coming to! Praise God!

THAT is our priority -- giving God the glory and thanks and praise! We have known from the beginning that this is a God appointed and God annointed project and just the beginning of things even greater!

"Rebuilding lives by rebuilding homes."

It is our prayer that all those attending will feel the touch of our Lord, know His goodness and love and realize the blessing of giving to others!

Home Sweet Home!

It's getting late and from the looks of our laundry strewn all over the floor it may be days before it's all done but . . . wanted to share some pictures of this past week with you. We hit the peak of the fall colors while in Tennessee and it was beautiful. We also managed to find the world's largest tree house and an amazing water falls.
Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we enjoyed taking them.
We are so thankful for this past week, a week to get away, be refreshed and renewed and a week to see the natural wonders of God's creation!

Surprise!

Yes, I know I said I wouldn't be posting anything new while we are away but . . . yesterday was just too blessed to not share it with all of you.

I think I already told you that on Sunday we found out my son and daughter in law were going to be in the same area as us? Well, we got together yesterday for one of the most fun days I can remember in who knows how long! No time tables, no committments, no dogs to let out or feed --- just the entire day to ourselves to enjoy each other. We took full advantage and I thank God for orchestrating such an amazing day!

Ryan (my son) called us as soon as we arrived Monday night. We were tired from the drive and a bit on the hungry side so we ate an early dinner and then took a walk through the town. We made plans to meet them at the cabin they had rented early the next morning.

Ryan knows that my most favorite thing to do in most the whole world is to horseback ride so he had arranged to treat us to horseback riding through the mountains! The sun was shining and the temps topped out above 80 degrees -- we couldn't have ordered a better day! We met them at their cabin, which was absolutely the cutest thing ever, nestled in the mountains and decorated like something out of Southern Living magazine!

From there we headed out for some breakfast and then off into the mountains for our ride. We took the hour and a half ride and even though Monty admitted (later) that when he saw the group before us arriving back at the barn and watched them come down the mountain he was a bit leary -- he never said a word and off we went.

The fall colors were at their peak and certainly undescribable! We all agreed that even though we took a bunch of pictures there is no way they would do justice to the actual beauty that completely surrounded us all day long! Riding up the mountains and along some rather narrow paths did make a couple of nerves stand on end and going under a fallen tree also added to the "adventure." We all agreed that it was the perfect day and the perfect way to spend a morning and early afternoon. My deepest love and thanks to Ryan who really knows how to bring a smile to his mom's face!

After the ride we decided to take a drive up the mountain to see some of the historical sites. We then made the decision to keep going and visit the Indian reservation just on the other side of the state line. Like I said, no time tables and no committments!

After going through the village it was time to find something to eat again. We happened upon a little "Granny's Kitchen" buffet that was truly home cooking at it's finest! It was then that we made another decision -- the "big one." Ryan and Dedra had heard about an area across the mountain where elk would graze freely and was supposed to be quite the thing to see. Why not? We can do what we want today so off we went.

Monty and Dedra were our map coordinators riding in the back seat and did have some questions as to the types of roads we would travel to get to these famous elk. The farther we drove the curvier the roads got. The curves got so curvy that Ryan spent 100% of the time turning the steering wheel one way and then back the other and our top speed never got above 10 mph. And that was the good road! As we neared the sign "road narrows" and the road turned to gravel we realized that this road made the ones on the TV show "Ice Road Truckers" look easy! We literally did not have enough room to pass the occasional oncoming vehicle and while Dedra and Monty were freaking out in the back seat and I was holding my breath in the front, Ryan did an amazing job keeping us all from falling off the side of the mountain and down cliffs that seemingly had no bottom to them! This "drive" went on for over an hour and finally we arrived at the elk. They were grazing in an open field at the bottom of the mountain and were beautiful. We felt like Clark and family from the movie "Vacation" when they got to the Grand Canyon. It was there that Clark hurriedly got them out of their car, told them to take a quick picture and smiled at the beauty and pushed them back into the car in less than 60 seconds! We did stay a bit longer than that -- mainly to catch our breath and thank God for keeping us on the road!

It was then that the news came ---- the only way out of this place was to go back out the way we came in!!! You've got to be kidding? No way! And many more explitives seemed to ring through the air! It was nearing dark and going back that way and not being able to see? O Lord, help us!!!!

Monty and Dedra did fare alot better on the trip back as in the dark you couldn't see the bottom of those endless cliffs and we did not meet one oncoming car from the other direction so we did get out safe and sound. The only painful thing was our stomach muscles from laughing so hard! For hours we had laughed in the midst of our sheer panic and managed to have the time of our lives! By the time we arrived back at Ryan and Dedra's cabin it was past bedtime and Ryan was headed to their hot tub! I truly don't know how he could keep not only his composure but his driving skills in tact with all the commotion and laughter going on. He did have to stop a couple of times to wipe the tears of laughter from his eyes so he could attempt to see the road!

It was one of the best days ever and I am so thankful that God sees the ultimate plan and gently guides us into it! We could not have pre-planned that day! It wouldn't have worked! It was a God appointed and God annointed day and as the rains started falling just before we got back home we realized that God had allowed us to see and experience the absolute beauty of His nature and the beauty of the relationships He set before us!

This morning brought rain, heavy rains with leaves falling faster than the rain drops! We traveled from one city to another where we will get registered for our IGO conference tonight, enjoy dinner and worship and also get to see and spend time with Timothy! He arrived earlier today.

Taking a Break for Conference

Please indulge me as this will be the last blog entry for a few days. Monty and I are blessed to be able to attend our International Gospel Outreach's annual conference. We have not been since we received our license and ordination back in 2007 so it's long over due!

This year the conference is in Tennessee. Tomorrow we will be arriving in the Pigeon Forge area and today I received a text message from my son and daughter in law -- and that's exactly where they are for this entire week! He sent me a picture of the beautiful fall colors and so we are double blessed as we will be able to spend a couple of days with them before the conference begins. Since they live nearly 2 hours north of us it's going to be awesome to get to spend some time with them! I love how God works things together!!

So . . . this Saturday will still be a work day at Michael's. Schel will be coordinating alot of work on the outside grounds to prepare for the upcoming fundraising festival. There is grass to bush hog first and then mow, wood to be split and stacked, rocks to be moved, dirt to be moved and leveled, a large dumpster to be relocated and materials to be relocated. I will be anxious to see how it all turns out.

For the rest of you, please understand that I will not be blogging while we are away --- I'm not even taking my computer! It is my goal to not only have some much needed time with my dear husband but to also have some time of my own -- time to clear my brain of all that is going on -- time to focus on IGO Disaster Relief and it's future -- time to relax and just have some fun!

We would deeply appreciate your prayers for safe travel and wisdom in decisions made.

The Saturday Vineyard team grows!

From Pastors Jan and Martie to the "smallest" volunteer -- many showed up today to work and to share in the joy that surrounds not only Michael - but his entire place!

My morning started by having our neighbor and friend, Shelley, follow me to Michael's house so she could get her first day of vacation started with volunteering! I hope she's not too worn out and sore by the end of today to enjoy the rest of her time off! She was packing tree limbs the entire time!

After getting her dropped off and getting a list of supplies needed I was off to meet Ms Wanda. She is the same Ms Wanda that donated the Lowes card and purchased 2 ceiling fans for Michael. This time she had a new full size bed set, complete with bed frame, 2 sets of sheets, a matching comforter and a new pillow. She even took one of the paintings off her family room wall as she thought Michael might like it! It was a beautiful covered bridge scene and I know he will love it! When I gave her one of our flyers and talked to her about our upcoming fundraising festival she assured me she would be there and would be calling with items for the auction!! And she's 80 years old!!! Rob (from Stonegate) and his 2 children met me at Ms Wanda's so they could help move the bed. We then headed to Stonegate to use one of the office spaces as storage for the furniture and the items coming in for the festival.

A quick trip to Lowes for the materials and a fast food drive thru and I was on my way back to the team. They were ready and waiting and Monty decided to be the one to return to Lowes to exchange a couple of particular items and get a couple more. He had arrived with John while I was out.

Also helping today was Guy and Mike, also from Vineyard. Guy is a contractor and also knows what he is doing. Mike has his own landscaping business so he brought the chain saw and things needed to clean up the downed tree in Michael's back yard. He and Shelley made quite the team!

Keith also returned and is becoming a regular along with Rob and Monty. They were all working inside getting the new handicapped shower installed and also working in the spare bathroom.

It was just so great to see enough people there so work could be going on outside as well as inside. Everyone was smiling and laughing and again you could just feel the joy coming from the property.

Dallas came back for the morning. He was wishing he could stay all day but had family committments. The team was doubley glad he came because he let them know that his church, Fayetteville Baptist, located just around the corner and the church that had the bean dinner last Saturday that fed the team, was tonight having a hog roast! Guess where they were all headed when they finished their work day!!!!!!

About mid afternoon Pastors Jan and Martie came by and were astonished at all the different projects going on and how much different the inside is looking! It's always good to see them and know that they are getting to see and feel all that God is doing in and through this project!

By late afternoon I had to head back towards home. I still had a couple of places to stop in and ask for donations for the auction. And now here I am, the day should be ending but the team is still enjoying the hog roast and sharing bits and pieces of their day which means that sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the days God gives us!

We are so thankful for each and every one of these volunteers who gave us one of their days "off" to come and do things that most likely they wouldn't do -- even if they were getting paid for it! They are changing lives, and not just those right there -- people are watching as they drive by and they know something awesome is going on!

Fundraising Festival . . .

Yesterday and today were great planning days.
The date has been set and the plans are in full steam ahead motion!
The funding festival will be a blast and hopefully bring in ALOT of folks who are ready to help out and also enjoy the day with us!

This morning I loaded up the bed of my truck with the shower, toilet and sink and all their parts for Michael's spare bathroom. It was quite the job getting it all unloaded but I was able to back the bed of my truck up next to his platform on the ramp and from there I just slid the things off and inside the trailer. They will be there ready and waiting for Rob and the team on Saturday!

Back to the festival. . . we have the entertainment set up, the flyers are done (thanks to Ms Bev) and we are out asking businesses for donations of items to use in the not so silent auction. I paid a visit to the local Christian bookstore and got alot of suggestions of place that love to donate to causes such as this so tomorrow I will be out and about town.

We still have some department head positions to fill but know the right people will step up and take charge at just the right time.

These types of things take quite a bit of planning but it's so awesome to feel God present during every minute. Sus and I met today for a couple of hours and made even more progress. She's doing an amazing job and considering she just had major back surgery 3 weeks ago . . . oh my!

Cody took the position of media department head at our meeting yesterday and by this evening he had our flyer sent to 2 radio stations for their community announcements and had talked with Bob who did the first newspaper article on Michael a few weeks ago. He might be young but he listens and he follows through and has done a fantastic job!

It's so much fun putting something like this together and this afternoon as Michael and I stood in his trailer and looked out over the back where the festival will be I think he saw the same vision that I did and was excited!

BIG plans a comin'

My oh my, God has been busy today!

Actually He got started last night, in the middle of the night. I can't say that I love it when He wakes me from sleeping and gets my head to spinning with all His input . . . but it's always right on time every time!

I had a text message waiting for me when I got out of bed -- I wasn't the only one God woke up in the middle of the night! Sus also got the same wake up call and when we got together on the phone we were praying and planning and listening to His direction for the next 3 and 1/2 hours! Yes, my phone battery was over half spent but it was awesome!

You must stay tuned as we have a big planning meeting tomorrow after Bible study but here's what we know now . . .

On Saturday, October 29th we are having a fund raising festival for Michael's project! We don't have the exact name but tomorrow . . .
This festival will be a combination of churches coming together and all about praise and joy and fun and fellowship and a bit more praise. And of course -- raising money!
The day will be a work day during the morning hours and come afternoon we will be having entertainment (thanks to our dear friends Terry and Cheryl and their 10 children) along with a not - so - silent auction of items donated, food and a bit more food and games for the kids and prayers going up in thanksgiving and more food and more music and more things auctioned off and possibly a bon fire out back.
Our goal is to raise funding but even more than that -- to raise awareness that God is an incredible God and in the business of miracles. We don't have to sit back and be a spectator, we can be involved and smack dab in the middle -- if we will just listen to His guidance and be obedient!

I am so excited about this festival! Monty and I have been involved in many an outreach over the past 6 years and they are always life changing -- to those doing the work and to those who come and participate.

It will be a time to see the hand of God at work, to feel His presence and to experience the joy of the Lord Himself!

Super Size Work Day

The temps were perfect. The beautiful fall colors are popping out on so many trees. The sun was brightly shining. The team worked their hearts out and really accomplished alot today!

Rob was on the job early, complete with his trailer which was carrying his tractor! He decided to take full advantage of the nice weather and concentrate the work outside. He had the trench to the sewer dug by the time I got there! Monty and I met at Lowes to get him the rest of the pipe he needed and with Keith helping with the shovel they had the lines placed and were covering them up before noon.

Monty started in with the water lines and the shut off for the outside. That also got completed. By the afternoon they were joined by Schel, a member of Stonegate. He stayed all afternoon and the team got sooooo much done. Not only are the water lines in and insulated, the sewer lines are in and covered and the back yard leveled out.

By dinner time Sus, Schel's wife, came to the job. Considering she just had major back surgery less than 2 weeks ago it's amazing she is out and around! She wanted to make sure the entire team got dinner. The Fayetteville Baptist church, which is literally just around the corner, was having a bean dinner and she and Schel treated the team to a belly full of wonderful food!

By the time Monty got home he was more than tired. No wonder, it was after 8:30pm.

We are so thankful to this group of guys who have consistently donated their Saturdays to come and work with all they've got! I know each one of them works hard all week long but when they come to Michael's and get together you can really see and feel the joy coming from all of them. It's that joy of the Lord thing -- again -- you really should come and join in and experience it for yourselves!

My morning started out with meeting a woman I had never met, or of, before. Ms Wanda called me yesterday and said she had a gift card from Lowes she wanted to donate. Could I meet here at the church? You bet! I met her and she talked for nearly an hour, what a woman with a servant heart! She is knocking on the door of the age 80 and dedicates her life to helping others! Not only did she donate the card -- she wants to purchase the ceiling fan/lights for Michael! She said she will call me and most likely I can pick them up next week! She brought such a smile to my face and warmed my own heart with even more joy than it already had!

By late afternoon Sus and I had spent over an hour on the phone -- cooking up a wonderful plan! We are putting together a "funding festival" of sorts to raise money for Michael's project! We are working on the details but plan on music, food, fellowship and fun so be sure and stay tuned for the details! You won't want to miss it!

A "stirring" . . .

It's nearly bedtime but Monty is still next door working on Shelley's sink. Amazing the difference when we work to help someone rather than work to work!

My day consisted of mowing -- with the temps around 80 the grass continues to grow! Today I only did 4 lawns. Next week will be about the same. It's good to try and break them up so I don't have all 9 at one time! Mowing is always ministry time for me. Most of the people I mow for are widow women and it's nice to spend a bit of extra time talking with them and sharing. One woman got all new carpeting in her home and as I watched the workers lay the carpet roll out in the street to measure it reminded me of Mike and Ms Faye's build where the carpet installer did the same thing -- at midnight on a Thursday night! (for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about -- you can go to the blog archives, back to March and April of 2007 and you will understand).

As I was mowing I had a voice mail from a woman that I do not know. She said she has a Lowes gift card for Michael's build so I will be meeting her in the morning. What a blessing! And another opportunity for ministry!

Just as we were ready to meet our neighbors for our weekly cheap pizza night I got a phone call that sort of rocked my world! In fact, my neighbors said they had never seen me speechlesss! I cannot go into details at this time but this phone call showed me God is moving, stirring, challenging and directing us into something totally new, totally exciting and way outside the box! I know asking for prayers when being so vague is a bit tough but please join us in prayer! As details unfold I will keep you all up to date!

Monty, Rob and John will be heading to Michael's in the morning and hopefully others will join them as they install the handicapped accessible shower that's been donated and wrap up some more electrical and plumbing work. Many thanks to this Vineyard team who continue to come out and bless not only Michael but anyone and everyone involved in this rebuild! Let's go team!

Blessed donations

No, Solomon wasn't a donation but indulge me -- he's just too cute to not post his picture!

Today had me working on things for Michael most of the day. I received a phone call last night from someone who had remodeled their home and they wanted to donate a couple of things. I met with them late this afternoon and they had 2 - 5 gallon buckets of sheetrock mud, both nearly full, along with a couple of ceiling fans with lights.

Prior to meeting for the donations I was at the local plumbing store where they have the handicapped accessible 60" shower that they want to donate. It's an industrial grade which means it's a heavy duty shower with the grab bars molded into the side walls. It comes in pieces, the walls are 4 separate pieces and then the base is 1. It is already put together and the store doesn't want to disassemble it so Pastor Jan will be going to pick it up with one of his flatbed trailers later this week. They can strap it down and he will leave the trailer parked at Michael's until our Vineyard team returns this Saturday. They can disassemble it and the reassemble it inside as they install it. I have no idea what these industrial grade showers retail for but what an amazing blessing for Michael! I was also able to purchase a handicapped height toilet and a wall mount sink with faucet for his master bathroom with some funding that had come in last week.

After getting everything unloaded at his home it was time to make a few phone calls and head home.

As I was driving and with plenty of time to think (my truck radio is broken so the quiet is thinking time for me) I realized just how God is providing what we need right when we need it! We will be ordering all new windows (there are only 6) at the end of this week and I pray the funding to cover that cost will arrive when the windows do - about a week after being ordered.

We stand in and on faith and the promises of God. I've watched Him do miracles a thousand times over throughout our years in disaster relief and it's exciting to see Him keep them coming!

Please continue to pray for provision and for volunteers to come and help with the work.

Vineyard team takes "work day" seriously

Another Saturday, another scheduled work day and another day where the Vineyard team, along with Dallas from the local Baptist church showed up and showed out for the Lord!

The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing and the temps were on the cool side which all lead to the perfect day to be digging trenches for plumbing water lines and continuing the electrical work. Monty and Rob and John from Vineyard and Dallas from the Baptist church started the day. Dallas had to take off after lunch and then Keith from Vineyard called and said he and his son were on their way to help finish out the day.

They were all working on the water lines and plumbing which required everyone to be crawling underneath the trailer at one time or another. The legs you see are Rob's. When Keith and Jonathon showed up they also got to join in the fun in the mud!

Much, much progress was made as they worked over 10 hours before deciding to take a break and go to dinner. Michael joined the whole group and they had a really good time. They did have to return to Michael's as Rob's truck battery needed some "charging" time. Dinner was just enough time and Monty came rolling in home after being gone for 13 hours. He was more than a bit dirty and even more tired but was pleased with the progress and blessed by the entire day.

Many thanks to the entire group for taking their Saturday to come and bless Michael! I know God was smiling as He got to see His hands and feet and heart at work!

Same time next Saturday!

I spent the morning and into the afternoon rounding up materials for the team before heading back home. My neighbor, Shelley, came by with some fruits and vegetables she got at the farmer's market this morning and then my daughter and grandkids showed up and spent the evening with me. They even treated me to dinner out! What a treat, especially since all the guys were treating themselves!

We are still praying for and believing that the funding will come through for Michael's heating and air unit and the new windows. God is providing just what we need right when we need it so we pray and we wait and we stand on His promise of provision. Please join us in those prayers!

I found a way . . .

For those of you who know me quite well you know that "slowing down" or "taking it easy" just don't come natural for me.

My mind is always racing, this needs done, they need called, she needs this, he needs that, and on and on and on. I'm not complaining, just sayin'.

I keep paper and pen on my night stand so I can write things down when they come to me in the night.

I can really listen to two conversations at the same time and catch them both.

I can actually carry on two conversations at one time and keep them straight!

So today . . . I found a way to have it all go away! Clear my mind and get lost . . . comfortable and yet focused, enjoyment and release . . . all together.

How? you ask ---- shooting my gun! Shocked? So was I. Pleasantly so.

Monty and I took the afternoon and went to the range so we could practice what we learned a couple of weeks ago. We learned the basics and without practice we would need to relearn them.

When I got behind that gun, started rehearsing all the steps we were taught, focused on my breathing, closed my eyes and reopened them to aim -- the world went away! All of it! It just went away and I felt relaxed and rested and all frustrations vanished. Hours had gone by in what seemed like minutes.

I've always had trouble with the scripture, "be still and know that I am God."

I know God, quite well in fact.

Today I found out MY way to "be still."

Introducing . . . Solomon

Those of you who know us know we already have 2 dogs . . . and now . . . we have 3. This was not planned nor had we given any thought to adding a new family member. But . . . it was love at first sight and so . . . we welcomed Solomon into our household on Saturday.

I should blame it all on my son and daughter in law but . . .

Saturday was the day I got to spend with both of them. Each year there is a small city near them that has the best festival ever. They literally close down all the city streets and line them with craft and food booths. It's such a great place and I was really looking forward to going. My son and I were able to have a nice breakfast together and then met up with his wife, who was already at the festival. She and her mother always go early to "get the good stuff." The weather was a bit on the iffy side and the skies did open up a time or two -- much to the delight of the one woman who was selling umbrellas!

Last year there was a place selling puppies, all kinds. This year there was a place selling only chihuahua's. I had to go -- how could I not? And when I rounded the corner and saw the little fellow in the pics here my heart melted! I have seen literally thousands of chihuahuas, in Texas I think they came directly in the mail from Mexico as everyone had more than one! But I had never seen anything like this little guy. The owner, who was also the breeder, told me he was called a Chocolate Merle.

And for those of you who know me - you know how I love chocolate! But this kind?

Anyway, long story short -- she made him a blessing I could not pass by, especially since Monty made 4 phone calls "encouraging" me to bring him home!

He's 4 months old and weighs in at less than 2 pounds. His full growth weight should top out at 4 pounds, maybe 5? Yes, he fits in my pockets!

As for Bitty and Samson -- less than thrilled! Just like human children!!!

So many thanks to the lady for listening to our story and having her heart moved and blessing us with a truly adorable addition to our family!

Team Vineyard

It's 7:00pm and I just got the phone call that Monty is on his way home from Michael's! They've been there since this morning and you can see from the pics that they were all over the place, and sometimes under the place! Whatever was needed!

Rob, Keith and Monty from our home church, Vineyard, were joined by Michael's nephews, Zac and Cody. The more hands the better. When I stopped back by this afternoon Zac and Monty were the ones underneath the trailer working on the plumbing. Rob was inside and was going back and forth from framing to plumbing to giving advice on the electrical that Keith and Michael were working on.

Rob is a contractor by trade and Michael told me he wished he could just keep him for the duration! I agreed and have made that exact comment every time Rob has come to help us a disaster! He even went so far as to frame the box stand for the washer and dryer to sit on! We needed to have them raised off the floor for better reaching and the ones you purchase are just too expensive. Rob to the rescue and ta-da, they are built and ready!

The wiring was going well. It's always takes awhile to come in after someone else has started a project. No two people think alike and so the second one on the job has to try and figure out what the first one was thinking. They were rolling just fine this afternoon and I am wondering how close they got to finishing it?

We also had a visitor stop by this afternoon. Dallas -- who has also worked with us in the past. He brought a team to Mississippi for a week and also made a day trip to Columbus, Indiana during their floods in the summer of 2008. One thing we have always told every volunteer team over the years is, "when you get back home, we guarantee that within a mile from you is someone who needs help!" For Dallas that is exactly right -- he lives 7/10ths of a mile from Michael and had no idea we were there until the article came out in yesterday's newspaper! He plans on coming back, often!

Yes, the article was front page headline news yesterday! Bob, the reporter, did an incredible job and the 2 pics were great! And without us even knowing, he added a short story about Monty and I! I didn't know he has a regular column and when he used that to tell a bit of our history we were humbled and flattered. Michael was pleased with the article and we are anxious to see the results.

It's been a great day! Lots of work getting done and tomorrow is "work day" at Michael's. We decided that every Saturday is work day-- a day to concentrate on cleaning up and anything else thea might need done, depending on the people who show up and their skills.

I am excited about tomorrow as I am making a trip north to spend the entire day with my son and daughter in law. There is a small city just to the north of them that has a city wide craft show once a year and I always love going. And getting to spend the whole day with them is the best! I don't get to see him very often and I miss him! He has his own heating and air business and he got the best deal for us on Michael's system so as soon as the funding comes in . . .

The electric begins

I'm not sure where the morning went but by noon I was back at Michael's house. We were awaiting the arrival of David and his crew of workers who wanted to volunteer their afternoon to help. Pastor Jan was already there marking walls that needed reframed and once again we ended up redesigning the kitchen -- just a bit.

This home is going to be exclusively for Michael. That means we have to look at things from his angle and most of the time we just ask him to come over and decide the answer to our question himself.

Case in point -- the placement of the electrical outlets. Where we would put them and where they need to be for Michael to reach them with ease can be two different locations. That debate is now answered and the one brave woman volunteer was nailing the boxes right where they needed to be.

The team of 6 were there by 1pm and got right to work with the wall framing and electrical. They really got alot done by the end of the afternoon and considering their work days begin at 5:30am they had put in a really long day! Most of the wiring is now pulled in the main part of the house. And the only thing left to frame is the closet for the hot water heater.

We are so thankful to David and his team. They all want to come back and help again and they know all they have to do is call. An added blessing? David wants a list of everything we still need, and he said he meant everything -- so you know what I'll be doing right away! He will also be providing the exterior power pole and bringing the truck and tools needed to install it in the ground. The blessings just keep on coming! I love to see others come in, not knowing what to expect or what they will be doing, and then watch the transformation in them as their heart gets into it and God begins to touch them and then you just don't know where He will lead them!

The next step? Monty, our contractor friend Rob, and another friend, Keith, will be going to Michael's first thing on Friday morning where Monty and Keith will work on the electrical and Rob will start with the plumbing. Be sure and stay tuned as these 3 could be mistaken for the 3 stooges! :)

God appointed -- God annointed

This was quite the day! Packed so full of our Lord and His hand -- incredible and I am so thankful to God for letting me live and participate in His world today!

This morning was our weekly Bible study where we continued in the book of Proverbs. We are studying the 14th chapter and it never ceases to amaze me how God covered it all. He lays it out in black and white that if we do it this way what our reward will be. If we choose to do it the other way what the cost will be for us. And yet we still don't get it, we still question and we still mess it up! It's tough being a human, isn't it!

Immediately after Bible study I got a call from David. David had his own business and has 18 employees who would like to come and help out at Michael's house. I talked to him yesterday and he was going to meet with his crew this morning and see how many of them wanted to volunteer. When he called me back today he said he has atleast 8 and maybe 10 and that they will arrive tomorrow around 1:00pm --- after they put in a full work day! I am thrilled and can't wait to meet them all. They will divide themselves in 2 groups where one will focus on the rough in plumbing and the other the rough in electric. Pastor Jan will oversee both groups while reframing a couple of walls for us.

Sus then told me that I needed to make a visit to a local plumbing supply company and talk with the owner/manager there. He had a 60" wide handicapped accessible shower, industrial grade, that he would possibly donate! How awesome is that!

So after talking with David I headed to Michael's house to take a look at the framed in walls. We spent alot of time, just the 2 of us and a tape measure. His master bath was just too small and we calculated, we measured and we tossed around all sorts of ideas. And then God . . . gave me the idea that solved it all. Why in the world were we trying to put the washer and dryer and hot water heater all in the master bedroom and hallway areas? The old excuse --- because that's where they were before!!! Duh!!! We decided to move all of them into the spare bedroom where we could create a closet to close in the water heater and then have a space next to it for the washer and dryer and still have enough room on the wall for a base cabinet and small counter top where Michael can use to fold his clothes! Presto! Problem solved! So now we will extend the master bath and heating and air closets to more than enough room and Michael will have a nice size clothes closet in his bedroom. A bedroom is supposed to be a place of peace anyway and having all those things in there would lead to anything but peace! Thank you Lord!

Pastor Jan joined us there and agreed with all our changes. He will start the reframing of a couple of the walls tomorrow. He is such a blessing as he is an expert in anything and everything that has to do with construction!

A dear friend of mine, Mark, showed up while we were all there. Mark used to paint houses for a business and will hopefully be able to schedule his time to do the painting at Michael's.

From there I headed to the plumbing supply store where I met Jim -- what a wonderful man. He said he's had this shower for awhile and just couldn't get rid of it. I told him that the reason was because it was to be for Michael's and that's why it was still there. He and I had a chance to talk awhile and by the time I was leaving he agreed to give us a discount on everything we purchase there! And I made sure he knew he was invited to the House Blessing celebration when the time comes!

I barely made it home in time to turn around again and head to our home church. Pastor Dave started a class on healing. We just got home and wow! It was awesome! It's just the first class and I can already see that this instructor isn't going to beat around the bush -- he's going head on into the "meat" of healing and I know it's going to be an eye opening and wisdom filled class!

So now it's already past bedtime and yet my heart and mind are so filled with God and His perfect works and timing . . .

What an awesome God we serve!

Thanks Appleseed

Don't know how many of you have heard of the Appleseed program but let me tell you -- it's incredible!

For the past 2 days Monty and I had the chance to take a bit of a break and attend the local Appleseed program that was held here in Bedford.

After over 20 hours of intense training I have now learned to handle and shoot my Ruger 1022, an M1 Garand and an AR 15!!! I guess being a woman in construction wasn't enough -- so why not learn to shoot!

We learned to shoot from the prone (laying flat on your belly) position, standing and sitting. And then we learned to go from one position to another while loading and shooting. We learned more about safety that I thought was possible, we learned all about the American Revolution, we shot target after target and then shot some more, we had amazing lunches each day (they were more like dinner) and also made some new friends.

I admit that I was surprised at the number of women and children there! In total we outnumbered the men! Turns out women are really good shooters! No, I'm not kidding!

Yesterday the weather was perfect, sunshine with a light breeze which caused quite a few folks to return today with sunburned faces. Today . . . the morning brought rain but no stopping the training. We shot all during the rains and I guess the rain just decided to let us win (we were packing some pretty hefty power) so it stopped about an hour into the training and stayed away all day. The clouds were very welcome and just as we were finishing up this evening the skies opened up again and the rains came pouring. This time we let the rain win!

My deepest thanks to all who run this Appleseed program. I came away feeling like I really can not only handle a gun properly but I know about them, I know how to operate them and I really know how to shoot them!

It was a fun weekend and a great way to clear the world from my head for awhile. Everyone needs that every once in awhile.

I've always heard the saying "freedom isn't free" and after the past 2 days -- I have a new found respect for our forefathers and for our freedom! They fought hard and it was more than costly and we are still free --- my deepest thanks and respect to all of them --- you!

"Life" . . . thanks to New Jersey

The subflooring is in. The underneath has all new insulation. And now the walls are reframed and we are ready for the electrical and plumbing to start! All in 5 days!!! All thanks to Jack and Louis from New Jersey. And this evening we had to bid them farewell, not an easy thing to do.

Monty and I invited them over for dinner at our house so we could get a chance to visit with them. Jack has worked with us 3 times before, twice in Mississippi and once in New Orleans and it was so good to see him and so sad to see him go. And meeting Louis and seeing the change in him, the light in him, the love in him -- and it's just his first mission trip! I can't wait to see what God does in him when he returns home!

God always sends us who we need right when we need them and Jack and Louis were the who and this week was the when! I love God's plan!

So tonight we had some time to visit, take a few pictures, watch a couple of videos that they hadn't seen and then pray over them and send them on their way. They will be leaving at 5:30am tomorrow so please join us in covering them with prayer. Jack is a brand new Grandpa and is quite anxious to get home and see his first grandson! Again, thanks to both Jack's and Louis's wives -- hopefully next time you can both make the trip!

I posted the picture of Michael because I want you to see the difference in him. See the smile, see the light and see the hope! Louis put it perfectly -- "when we got there Michael seemed pretty down but when we left today he had life in him!" God's perfect plan and God's perfect love! Priceless! The group picture is great as it's Micheal's sister and his two nephews with an about - to - be niece in law(I think that's the proper title????) and his sister's granddaughter! They have all worked so hard helping out and we are so thankful and know they will be right along side of him every step of the way!

It was also fun to celebrate Monty's birthday this evening. His mother treated us to breakfast this morning and his father called him this afternoon and we spent the evening with dear friends so what a great birthday! We hadn't heard from his dad in a very long time and had been concerned. Seems he has had some health problems and hopefully is getting some things straightened out. Please keep him in your prayers too.

Floors are done, walls begin

Quite the crew aren't they! Amazing is more like it. Before this day, their 4th day, they had all the subflooring replaced -- and all the insulation underneath! By the end of the day the first wall was up and set.

Jack and Louis have been wonderful and it's sad to think that tomorrow is their last day. They did get some extra help today with Michael's nephew, Zac. One more person really makes a difference and they were glad to know he will be back tomorrow.

Being able to remove the bathroom walls before replacing the subflooring made it so much easier and now we can rebuild the walls just where we want them. We are opening up each bath a bit more in order to make it easier for Michael to move around in them. It's so exciting to see them get started. The smile on Michael's face was priceless!

Late this afternoon the local newspaper sent out a reporter, Bob, along with his photographer, Pete. They seemed to really enjoy interviewing everyone there and watching all that was happening. They hope to have it in their Sunday paper next Sunday. It's always a great idea to have news like this in the paper. They give hope to others out there that good things still do happen and God is still in the business of miracles. Our thanks to Pastor Martie for calling them and giving them a head's up and for Bob and Pete coming to see us and putting the story together.

Speaking of miracles, Sus made a couple of steps of faith today that also produced incredible results. We now have a big dumpster in the back yard and will most likely have it donated before we're done. They already gave her an amazing deal and had sweetened the deal even before the end of the day! And she also managed to get a banner/sign donated to put in the front yard. The title will read, The House that the Lord is Building. Bev came up with the title and it's perfect. The sign company is going to mount it on a board that can be posted in the front yard and leave enough room that folks can stop by and write well wishes and prayers for Michael. Both of these things happened because Sus took the step of faith to make the calls! God had both miracles just waiting in the wings until someone decided to step in and take them! Wonder how many more He has waiting for us all?

Tomorrow will be Jack and Louis's last day. I have no doubt that they will have all the walls newly framed in which means that we will be ready for the plumbing and electrical and then move on to closing it up with walls and ceilings! This was the week that put us over the hump and we are forever grateful to these 2 men of God who listened to His call and obeyed! We hope to see them back for the House Blessing!

Jack and Louis will be coming to our house for dinner tomorrow night and will help us celebrate Monty's birthday! It will give us a chance to visit and say goodbye and thank you and also to be sad to see them leave! Fridays with volunteer teams are always a mixture of thanksgiving for what they've done and sad to see them leave. I guess I should be used to it but . . . I'm not!

Wonderfully cooler Wednesday makes New Jersey smile

It's difficult to get a picture of Jack standing upright and I am so glad he has a family member that is a chiropractor as he's going to need a few visits when he gets back home.

On the other hand, Louis is always standing upright -- but looking at the pictures makes you wonder where in the world is he? He's literally standing on the ground underneath the trailer, between the floor joists, scraping the old subfloor off the joists where it had been glued down. He always has a chisel in one hand and a hammer in the other. It's tedious and tough work but he's always smiling!

I had to smile today as I watched one of the ways Michael is helping. As the tongue - in - groove subflooring is being put in place Michael rolls his wheelchair over top of the connection area to make sure it's flat with no gaps or bumps --- what a perfect idea! Today as he was "stopped" over top of a seam line he watched as a rather large mouse decided that these cooler temps were too much and the wide open space of no flooring was just inviting him to make the leap and jump inside and head for some insulation to keep warm! It brought a smile to my face but not so with Michael and I think that mouse was most likely "evicted" shortly after I left!

Yes, our temps fell 30 degrees from yesterday and that's a welcome change for Jack and Louis. Jack even laughed when he said he caught a chill this morning!

The days work went well and they only have the master bedroom flooring to do tomorrow and will most likely start reframing the bathroom walls by afternoon.

On my trip to Lowes this afternoon I was hoping they had the computer program that they had in the Texas store where you can punch in measurements and design your own deck. They have the program but not an updated version that has the capability to design ramps. No problem, we've done enough of them I think I could design it in my sleep. But it was a great opportunity to talk to one man at the construction counter. He saw my new IGO Where He sends me . . . shirt and starting asking questions. His face lit up as I explained to him what we were doing and how God had always provided in the past and we knew He would do so this time. As I was leaving he told me that he could see my heart written all over my face and that I truly loved what I do --- and of course I had to agree 800% and smile right back at him!

This evening they are attending church services at Stonegate Faith Center and I have no doubt that they are being loved on and super blessed by everyone there! They might be small in numbers but they are one of the largest churches I have seen when it comes to love!

Tomorrow afternoon I'll be headed back as the local newspaper called today and wants to do an article, possibly in the Sunday edition. It's always nice to put good news in the paper and it's my hope that they will want to do follow up articles and be there on the last day when we have the party of all parties at the House Blessing Day!

Be sure and stay tuned --- and to the wives of Jack and Louis back in Jersey -- we love you both and are so thankful to you for sharing your other halves with us, and with Michael, this week! You're the best -- and don't be afraid to remind them of that when they get home!!!! But do cut them a break if they have a few more aches and pains than usual!!!!

Blessed Tuesday

It's only Tuesday and yet things were happening so quickly and so miraculously that it just went by way too quickly!

My day started with a trip to Cassady Electric where Ms Mae had a list of all the electrical supplies we would need and was going to let me know "if" she could donate anything. By the time I left she had donated all the wiring (have you seen the cost lately?), all the receptacles, all the switches, all the plate covers for the receptacles and switches and the GFI outlets! What a huge blessing! All I could do was hug her, thank her and let her know that's she just "the best". She has been a dear friend for years now and I know God placed her in my life for a good reason. Through the years she and I have talked about how it is being a woman in a mostly man's field and the fun we've had! Thanks Ms Mae, you are God's servant indeed!

From there I had just enough time to get to the Post Office and mail some of our IGO Disaster Relief shirts to James and Timothy.

Then it was off to Michael's to meet with the electrical engineer to get the details on where we are to put his power pole and all the instructions that we need to go with it. Mr Jeff was a very nice gentleman who got a kick out of what we are doing. He gave me all the answers I needed and even spent a few minutes with Monty via speaker phone to answer a couple of final details. Since Monty and some of our friends from our home church are doing the electrical they now know exactly what is required.

After that meeting I headed to Bible study, even if I was over an hour late. I got there just in time for some special words of prophecy and blessing and to share all the things that have been going on with Michael's rebuild. It's so fun to share and see the expressions on the others' faces. This church is new into missions and seeing and hearing about all that is happening, how God is providing and out doing anything we could ask for is lighting them on fire for mission work! When Susan made a comment about it today my response was, "welcome to our world when we are in the mission field." And our mission field seems to be very close to home right now!

After Bible study I was heading back to Michael's. Jack and Lewis are really working well together now and have made alot of progress on replacing the subfloor and the insulation underneath. They were nearing the 3/4ths mark of done when I left. And they still had alot of the afternoon left so who knows how much more they got done!

They were excited to hear that one of the church members had made them a home made dinner for tonight so they could save some money and eat in. And Michael's sister's family had stocked their refrigerator and cabinets with even more food! One thing we know is that volunteers never lose weight on a mission trip!

Pastor Martie, Susan and Bev made a visit to Michael's this afternoon to pray over them and bless them. You can see them circled for prayer in the photo above. And, of course, Michael got his own prayer over him!

One thing I have noticed in the past couple of days --- Michael is a pretty reserved fellow, not alot of expression in his face and not very exciteable. Now . . . he is smiling all the time and loves to tell about the work being done and hear about all the miracles happening all around him! He has a light in his eyes and a warmth in his heart that shows! I know it's that "joy of the Lord" for all to see!

And tomorrow is Wednesday . . . already! Wonder what all God has in store?

New Jersey at work

It was a bit later than they had thought as they got tied up in road closures and road work but Jack and Lewis arrived last night from New Jersey. It was so great to see Jack again since we hadn't seen him since the summer of 2007 when we were working in New Orleans. And it was awesome to meet Lewis as well.

Schell and Sus also met us at the church and really blessed them by taking them on a short tour of the city and then treated them to dinner. Sus also shopped today and stocked up the refrigerator and cabinets at church so they would have some extra food!

They were up and ready to roll this morning. I met them in the parking lot of Lowes and they had already discovered the Bob Evans directly across the street so they were really ready to go!

We got to Michael's and he was all ready for them. The trailer was all cleaned up and ready for workers to come in and get started. The plan was to continue replacing the subflooring along with the underneath insulation. After a trip to Lowes for more materials they made good progress - for a Monday. Mondays are the day where everyone works to learn how to work together to accomplish their goals. You might know the other people on your team but you haven't worked with them before so it takes some time to "get in sync" with the others. They are now in sync and ready to work tomorrow.

Since there are no showers at the church they are going to Pastor Jan and Pastor Martie's house and they welcomed them to come there every day they are here! A huge help!!

I got them all settled and headed back home since I had a list of 9 yards that needed mowed. With the light rains we had all last week some of the yards actually did grow and I managed to get 6 of them done. The last 3 will be done on Wednesday.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with an electrical engineer to designate where Michael's power pole will be set. There used to be another mobile home parked there and the pole was behind the trailer making the power lines go over the top of the trailer. According to the construction manual we have from the electrical company that is illegal so they are going to meet me there so we can come up with the right location.

From there I will hopefully be able to catch the last part of Bible Study and then make a trip back to Michael's to get you some more pictures.

Please keep Michael, Jack and Lewis covered with prayers for a safe and productive week -- a week spent in the presence of Jesus as they are His hands and feet!

Revelation 21:4

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever." (New Living Translation)

May we never forget!

"Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness." James 3:18    This verse was included in Pastor Dave's message this morning and as God does with me sometimes -- He had me "sowing" less than 2 hours later --- when I thought I was going to our church picnic and have the opportunity to just sit and visit with friends. Think again!

Divorce is never a peaceful event. For all of us who have experienced it -- no matter how determined you both might be that it will be a peaceable ending --- think again. If we were able to make it a peaceable ending we wouldn't have had it end in the first place!

Years ago friends of our got divorced. They hadn't been married all that long but it was still "unpeaceful" (if that's a word?) and we became closer friends to the man than the woman. It just happened, we didn't really "take sides" but we lived closer to him and it the friendship just grew. For a few years it was the 3 of us everywhere. Where you found Monty and I you would find him and vice versa.

One evening that we were just "the two of us" planning on having a quiet dinner together we were "greeted" by his ex-wife. She was more than a bit angry and let me know it, in no uncertain terms and directly in my face. From that time on there was a distance between us and in fact I don't think we'd even seen her since then.

Until today! She came to the church picnic! Yes, I was more than shocked but was in for even more. Monty came and told me she apologized to him and wanted to do the same with me. I had tried to be cordial as we helped get food organized on the tables but admittedly found it difficult. I was "civil" but not much more. And now he's telling me she wants to talk with me and apologize.

"Peacemaker" is a name that people have called me in the past and today put it to the test! I did go to her and expected a quick apology at which point I would forgive and that would be that.

But God . . .

She wanted to "take a walk" and so off we went on the local park's trail. I don't know how long we were gone because not only did we walk the entire thing - we sat on one of the benches for quite some time. In fact, when we got back to the picnic it was all done, the tables and chairs were loaded in the back of my truck and everyone was gone!

What did I learn today? First of all -- be careful what Pastor Dave preaches because he does have an inside line to God!
Second -- when he does preach -- pay very close attention as I am going to be tested later -- and not a written test!
Third -- being apologized to can feel a bit uncomfortable -- but the way to bring in comfort is to forgive!
Fourth -- and most important -- It IS a blessing to build a bridge of understanding and communication than to build walls!

I thank God for this opportunity to become closer to someone I didn't really know very well in the first place and I thank Him for giving me the words I needed to minister to her --- His Word through my heart and out of my mouth through her ears and into her heart!

She felt better. I felt better. And so the picnic for us had a different definition than for others but you know what . . . ours was a great picnic!

"Where two or three are gathered . . . " He WAS in the midst of us! Thank you Lord!

PS --- hey Pastor Dave --- how about giving a girl a head's up on your future sermons so I can be ready!!??      :)

Oh yes --- Monty's birthday party last night was amazing -- he said the best he's ever had! The kids went out of their way --- 2 cakes complete with candles, cards, signs, presents, songs and enough love to nearly drowned the man! We are so blessed to have this family as our family!!!!!!! We love you all and can't wait until we get together again!!!!!!!

A very special weekend

I bet if I asked everyone I met they would remember every detail of where they were 10 years ago tomorrow!

It doesn't see like it's been 10 years but time does go by so quickly. On each anniversary of 9/11 I wear the bracelet with James DeBlase's name on it as a memorial to him and all the others who lost their lives. And each year I am so thankful to his wife for responding to the letter I sent her and thankful to my friend who mounted it in a keepsake frame for me.

Let's all say a special prayer for all those families and let's NEVER forget!

This is also a very special weekend for us in quite a few ways.

Monty's birthday is next Friday and this evening our beloved family with 10 children are coming over for dinner and bringing the party to him! Terry and Cheryl and all the kids hold such a special place in our hearts and they were so excited when I asked them if they would like to plan a birthday party for Monty. Goodness only knows all the work they have done and I know, without a doubt, that it will be the best birthday party in his life!!!!

Another exciting thing is that we are actually here for our home church picnic tomorrrow afternoon. It's always fun to get to visit with everyone and enjoy more than enough food at the same time. We pray the rains will hold off.

And last -- but definitely not least -- our team of volunteers will arrive from New Jersey tomorrow evening. Jack and Lewis are coming to work at Michael's all week! We haven't seen them since 2007 when they made a trip to New Orleans to work with us. Prior to that they worked with us twice while we were in Mississippi and it's so exciting for us to get to see Jack again! We will miss seeing his wife, Sue, and the rest of the team but are so thankful to their church for making it possible for these 2 men to come and be such a blessing to Michael and his entire church.

Be sure and stay tuned for pictures and stories from this week. They will be working on replacing the underneath insulation and subflooring all week. But most of all -- they will be pouring out the love of Jesus all over Michael and anyone else who steps foot on the property!

Remember also that the Disaster Relief fund is what we will be using when we return to the field. That fund is super important and we thank those of you who have already donated.

****Michael's update **** We have all the skirting donated and on sight and today I visited a dear friend of mine who owns their own electrical company and presented our needs for rewiring the trailer. I am to check back with them on Monday and I am praying much of the material list will be donated! Please join me in that prayer!

Jack, from New Jersey, will be leaving on Sunday to drive here and be a blessing to Michael all next week. At this point I don't know if he's coming alone or bringing others with him. I expect to hear from him tomorrow. If he comes alone he will be staying here at our house and if he brings others they will stay at Stonegate's fellowship center. Either way there will be great progress next week and we are so thankful to Pastor Mike's church for making it possible for Jack to come and help!
